THE ROADSIDE TREE
From. time immemorial Christmas trees have grown in
Oregon with the romping abandon of pigweeds in a
barn lot. Anybody at any time could go out and chop
down any symmetrical little fir tree and thank you at
that. Oregon fathers fought trees as their grandfathers
fought Indians. Trees stood stiff and stubbornly high
between them and a living, and they were pleased to
lay them and all their kind low upon the fire pile and
kill all their little progeny.
Times have changed. Today trees are worth more
than the dirt in which they grow. Whoever unauthoriz
ed, cuts a roadside Christmas tree commits a misdemean
or in the eyes of the. law and an offense against society.
Upon these young firs our posterity must depend for
housing and home heat. Their growth along the road
side or near it may make all the difference between de
coration and desolation. They may have a landscape
value far greater than their value as lumber or fuel.
Trees are now our friends and not our enemies.
Therefore, woodsman, spare that tree! Portland
