BE SURE TO VOTE
The election next Wednesday will be one of the most
important ever held in this city, for it going to have a
distinct bearing upon the coining of the Oregon Trunk.
Every voter in that ward should cast his ballot, for since
there are three candidates every vote is going to count.
0. A. Smith is depending upon 'a split vote to win. We

THE CITY PARK DEAL
There is a well-laid plot to defeat the efforts of the
Oregon Tnmk to secure that portion of the city park
for which it has been offered annrovimatplv sisnnn
The scheme is to offer it in such a way that if the L Krom s
ouumem racmc aoes not cany out its offer, the Oregon
Trunk cannot buy what it requires, unless it buys all of
the property. In addition, there is to be a third' party
to the deal, so that when the Southern Pacific either
refuses to buy all, or offers a price for the whole site,
this third party will step in and make a slightlv hitrher
offer. Under the law, the highest bidder, must be
awarded the park-site and the Oregon Trunk will hp lfr

We are citing this one scheme to show to the people
of the Second Ward that the railroad question is a
vital one in this election and to show them, and the
rest of the people in the city, that the -Southern Pacific
is still at work on its plan, to so fence in Klamath Falls
that it will be practically impossible for the Oregon
Trunk to enter, except at such a staggering price that it
will abandon the attempt.
The test will come in the selection of a councilman. If
the people of the Second Ward want the free and
untrammeled entrance of the Oregon Trunk, then 0.
A. Smith must be defeated not only defeated by a
small majority, but by such an ovenvhelming vote that
it will serve notice upon the present members of the
city council that they must cease fighting Mayor God
dard's railroad program.

THAT $300,000 STEAL
Right today there is being carried on a scheme where
by the Southern Pacific will make a compromise deal
with the city in the matter of the $300,000 that Klamath
Falls has invested in the Strahorn railroad. Under
these negotiations this city will be gypped out of at
ieaet half of this money, if not all. The result of the
second ward election is to have an important bearing
on this question. If O. A. Smith is overwhelmingly de
feated, the council is going to take it as an indication
of the sentiment of the entire city and will not dare
cany out any plan that has for its purpose a settlement
less than the full amount of the money advanced for
the construction of this railroad.
The people of the second ward, just as do the people
of th.e entire city, know that Klamath Falls put up this
$300,000 with the distinct understanding that this rail
road was to be built to Bend and bring into this city
the Hill lines. If they had known that the line was to
be turned over to the Southern Pacific, they never would
have voted one cent. Now that Strahorn has sold out
the city, betrayed the confidence the people reposed in
him and turned the line over to the Southern Pacific, the
people want that money back eveiy penny of it. They
are not going to make any other settlement possible by
electing to the city council a man who will fight Mayor
Goddard, through whose efforts it has become possible
for the Northern lines to get into Klamath Falls. That
is why we confidently expect to see O. A. Smith over
whelmingly defeated next Wednesday.
HAVE PROMISES BEEN MADE?
Shortly before the city council passed the ordinance
calling the second ward election, various parties began
interesting themselves in the candidacies of those seek
ing the office of councilman. Among these were "Bill"
Lee, county assessor, who now seems to be one of the
chief pooh bahs of the O. A. Smith campaign. Mr.
Lee called upon A. J. Lyle and asked him to be a can
didate for councilman.
