..si Simolicitv is the keynote of thisde-
: : inn which a!apl itself to all colors
and textures of brick. With Kood bond and mor
tar joint treatment, it will be a Rem in any land-Rcaix-.
Two shades of brick miht be used, one
lor the field and the other for the trim. Thus
the band course at the second story window sill,
the quoins, arches, and the like might be either
nightly darker or lighter than the body of the
wall, preferably darker.
Following the usual Colonial plan, the en
trance hall has la?en centered, with the stairway
nscending to a landing where one might expect
Ihe genial welcome of grandfather's clock.
The living room on the left is unusually large
ivith a fine fireplace on the opposite v.all and
French doors opening to the sun porch. The
dining room on the right opens on a breakfast
porch beyond, directly connecting with the
ut ten, p;uitry, and rear porch. Tliis arranse-
Duigncd fur American Face Brick Auociation
ment would, if desired, permit the use of the
breakfast porch as a play room for the children.
A lavatory and coat closet are off the hall.
Note the garage connected with the kitchen.
Of the four large bedrooms on the second
floor, two are arranged for twin beds. A linen
cabinet is found in the hall. If the two bath
rooms shown are not needed one may be con
verted into a sewing room if so desired. The
attic wliich has sufficient space for several more
rooms is reached by a convenient stairway.
The porch adjacent to the dining room and
kitchen may, if desired, be converted into a
maid's bedroom by omitting the French doors
from the dining room. If the building site
should happen to slope to either side, the garage
could be placed under either porch instead of
where now shown.
The basement is arranged fcr laundry, heater
and fuel rooms, vegetable cellar, storage, and a
fine light space for work-shop. The ceilings of
both floors are 8 feet G inches ia beight, and the
content is 40,000 cubic feet

SCOTCH PLAIDS
A HE VERY SMART
SCOTCH plaids are In vogue agnin.
Perhaps we might say that
Queen Mary and Princess Mary gave
them a boom nt one of the recent
gatherings nt Balmoral Castle at
Hraemnr by appearing in tartan
skirts.
Now the "Black Watch" tartan
and the black and white Shepherd s
plaid, which are neutral in tone are
in special demand. Skirls made from
tho plaids which are shown in the
smart shops are closely pleated at
the bock like kills. Their fronts are
wrapped and fastened on tho side
with a largo gold or silver kilt
pin. These ndd H smart touch to
the garment, Both the Qttoen and
the Princess wore skirts "which fell
almost to tholr ankles. They -wore
woolen stockings.
Highland tailors In Scotland are
very much amused at tourists who
wear tartan skirts, with silk hosiery
and high heeled slippers. And after
all the walking oxford with smart
sport hoso ore the proper thing to
bo worn With such garments.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 4. ()P)
Proposals for Immediate reductions
in the federal inheritance tax with
appeal at the end of six years were
indorsed today by Chairman Green
of tho house ways and means com
mittee. Such a scheme was presented to
the committee yesterday by the
national icommittee on inheritance
taxation composed cf tax experts
from every section of the country.
In indorsing the six years' plan,
Mr. Green said this time would
give opportunity for states tD enact
uniform inheritance tax laws prior
to withdrawal of the federal gov
ernment taxes.
Chairman Green opposed immedi
ate appeal, but suggested that full
credit might be allowed In settle
ment of t'ae federal levies for
amounts paid on state inheirtaace
taxes. Secretary Mellon has pro-posed
immodiate repeal and his posi
tion was endorsed yesterday by a
number of governors.
