on the River road near the Keller

WHY DIDN'T THEY BUILD?
While testifying at the railroad hearing in Portland.
Mr. Sproule, president of the Southern Pacific, asked
why the Oregon Trunk did not build south, during tho
past years while they were stopping at Bend?
The answer is not hard to find. There was not suf
ficient tonnage to justify their coming. The Southern
Pacific cannot deny the fact that the line into Klamath
county has been a source of much profit. It has been
stated time and again that this branch was one of the
best paying pieces of railroad in. the United States.
Had the Oregon Trunk come in it would have to look
for its tonnage in Southern Pacific territory and the
result would have been neither road would pay.
Now it is different. New tonnage tonnage that the
Southern Pacific will not get is in sight. Two manu
facturers state that they will produce 330,000,000 - feet
of lumber a year more than is produced by all of the
mills now operating here. Forty percent of this ton
nage will go to the Southern Pacific, sixty per cent to
Oregon Trunk. This new tonnage, in addition to that
which will be developed by reason of these new mills,
will be sufficient to pay the Oregon Trunk, if it does
not a single ton from the mills now here, and yet
leaves forty percent for the Southern Pacific. That
being true, "where is the S. P. injured?
If these big producers had been ready to begin
operations before this, the Oregon Trunk would have ex
tended its line. That is why they did not come in be
fore, because the tonnage would not have been sufficient
and the interstate commerce commission would not
have granted them the right to do so.
BACK IN 1923?
We are told bv President Sproule of the. Southern Pa
cific that as far back as 1923 "a tentative agreement
was made" between his company and Mr. Robert E.
