George N. Angell of The
Oregon Farmer Tells of
Improvements Seen
"Klamath has made itreat strides

week and has been spending three
days since looking over the agricul
tural situation here with Comity
Agent I'. A. Henderson. "The evi
dence of development Is everywhere,
both in city and country, aud 1 am
more and more impressed with the
agricultural possibilities of this great
'empire awakening'." he said. "As
the timber disappears, you will need
to fall back more and more on other
products of the soil, and every forward-looking
movement toward in
creasing those resources will tell
in later years."
At tho COCSty fair, Angell was
particulaiy impressed by the live
stock, farm crops, and club exhibits,
although he said that the floral,
community and women's exhibits
also did great credit to so young a
fair. The sire and Quality of the
club exhibits he considered merely
another evidence of tho efficiency
of Frank Sexton, club leader, who
he says is without a superior in that
work in Oregon. "The county, in
fact, is fortunate in its extension
service agents for there Is not a
more active or better posted county
agriculturist in the state than Hen
derson." The excellence of the beef
cattle display, the presence for the
first time of an Ayrshire exhibit,
and the high quality of some of
the dairy animals, particularly of
A. Pinelli's young Holsteln bull, all
helped to make the livestock show
a good one, the visitor said, and the
farm crops exhibit, particularly of
potatoes, was one of tho best he
had seen. The commercial display
of Netted Gems and their subsequent
sale at auction he considered a fea
ture which other fairs might well
adopt.
"Klamath is to be congratulated
on the fact that for the first time
some of its livestock was shown at
neighboring fairs, as well as on the
tact that this livestock won heavily
at Grants Pass. It will win at Med
ford, and I look for the time when
there will be considerable inter
change of exhibits between fairs in
the southern tier of counties, in
cluding Lake, Klamath, Jackson and
Josephine, and it will be a fine
thing for all of them when this is
established. Klamath county has
the stuff to show, as was very evi
dent from the general exhibits made
last year at the Jackson county and
Oregon State fairs, where they at
tracted a great deal of attention.
"The Oregon Farmer is much in
terested In new agricultural ventures
and It will watch closely future de
velopments in the lettuce and sugar
beet growing industries here, which
although still very young, give great
promise. A sugar beet factory here
would be a great boon to dairying,
and dairying always has been and I
think will be the greatest stabilizer
known to agriculture. Another en
terprise that seems more than worth
while is the Klamath Federated
Community Clubs board. I know
of nothing like it elsewhere but it
appears to furnish just the contact
necessary between city and country
and I shall hope to see the plan
adopted in many other counties."
Hovey Buys More
Timber Near Bly
Ten thousand dollars was the sum
of money paid by Richard H. Hovey
for a 500 acre tract of timber In
tho extreme eastern section of Klam
ath county.
The timber buyer purchased the
tract from J. T. Tuffs yesterday.
The tract Is located eight miles di
rect north of Dly and Is right along
tho Sprague river.
Another tract In the eastern
part of the county was purchased
from C. I. Eckman for $1000. The
timber acreage was 160 acres.
The two Hovcys Chester L. and
Richard H., have "by careful and
steady buying acquired an immense
body of timber in the eastern section
and are now rated among the larg
est timber owners in the county.
That the timber buyers arc not
anticipating manufacturing the pine
Is generally conceded, as It Is known
that tbey an: buying the timber as
an Investment.
MRS. WILMTH RETURNS
Mrs. (J, F. Wlllits returned yester
day from Talent, where she has been
for the past two weeks visiting with
her mother, Mrs. Alford. The elderly
lady has been In poor health for some
time.
