THE COUNTY FAIR
Members of the Klamath county fair board are to be
commended for the stand they have taken against the
paddle wheels, the cheap gambling devices for candy,
Rewpie' dolls, and Indian blankets, the knife rack and
other disgusting inventions for separating the visitor
from his money. , .
The county fair primarily is an instructive institution.
Its purpose is to show what has been accomplished
within the countv during the past year in the way of
agricultural, community and home endeavors. It like
wise affords an opportunity of giving expression to the
industrial growth of the county.
As an institution the county fair dates back to the early
days of the country, when people gathered from far and
near to exchange ideas, to become neighbors and to
meet in friendly competition.
But with the passing years, county fairs throughout
the west have gradually disintegrated and gone back,
and to a large extent have been nothing much more
than an excuse for cheap tent showss, tawdry gambling
games and their ilk to reap a rich harvest.
The eountv fair board, so we are informed, is provid
ing a full program of clean entertainment for the thous- $i fo
ands of visitors to this year s exhibition, ihe exnioits
from farm and factory and home will be far better and
bigger than in former years. It will be truly a fair
representative of Klamath county.
There is no place at the fair grounds for the traveling
fakir. The fair board has moved wisely and with cour
age. It means a cleaner and a better county fair.

WASHINGTON' Washington has
now probably the most complicated
traffic code in the country.
The original idea was to make tho
capital America's model in the hand
ling of automobiles a nice place
fo'r drivers and a paradise for thoi-'e
who walk.
Unfortunately the code's compilers
put too much into it, in an effort to
make it cover everything. They also
followed the congressional method. In
Including numerous regulations that
either mean nothing at all or else
which mean two or three different
and conflicting things, until they're
'interpreted."
The trouble is, the "interpreta
tions" differ and conflict, too.
An autolst, Interpreting a rule one
way, is pinched by a copper who

with an Interpretation all his own.
simultaneously bawls out the cop,
for Ihe hitter's Interpretation, and
soaks the prisoner for his.
