GAUGING A CITY'S GROWTH
The clay of the alliterative city slogan "build in
beautiful, busy Blanketville" seems to be fading and
the day of the city survey seems to be at its dawn.
Scientific scrutiny of a city's resources has taken the
place of the ardent, but sometimes misdirected, clamor
for industries in the municipal area.
Economic surveys of this kind have been made or are
being made by chambers of commerce of a number of
American cities, among winch are beatcie. i,os Angeie&,
Cincinnati, South Bend, Ind. Huntsville, Ala., Missoula,
Mont, Atlanta and Hutchinson, Kansas.
Some of these are made by engineers of national re
pute. Some are conducted with a particular object, such
as the Huntsville survey, which is designed to determine
the advantages of the city as a location for textile in
dustries. The Hutchinson survey is being directed by
the dean of the school of engineering of the state uni
versity. In every case che survey is intended to give the pros
pective manufacturer hard economic facts instead of
enthusiastic good wishes information as to market and
transportation conditions, taxes, fuel and labor supply,
living conditions for employes and various other things
he would like to know. In this way not only is the
organic growth of the city advanced ; it is also a perman
ent, not an ephemeral, expansion.
