ing ft big dirigible, such as the Los
Angeles or the Shenandoah, In order
to snub her up to the mast of a
mooring shin, like the Patoka, isn't
as slmplo as It may look, on paper.
The old system was for the air
craft to cast out a line which a fast
launch had to chase until somebody
on board managed to grnb it. It a
dirigible could hold still this would
be all right. Hut Bho can't.
TJndor way, she can maneuver,
but the minute she shuts oft power
Bho drifts before the wind. She's so
huge and light that she blows
around like D feather.
,'
., Needless to say, this kind of thing
made the pursuing launch streak it
like sixty. And turn and twist and
double, too. And stop and start and
reverse and all sorts ot foolishness.
. The navy has figured out a now
system now, which worked pretty
well when the Los Angeles was down
here recently. It was hastily Im
provised, at that.
Perfected, it promises to give en
tire satisfaction. It's a simple de-
ice tunny nobody thought of It
sooner. It works like this:
A dirigible's duo. The launch puts
out from the mooring ship, trailing
a cable, attached at .one end to the
bigger vessel.
At the cable's other end, on
board the launch, an iron cross is
fastened securely. A largo knot
would do 83 well but an Iron cross
was used in the actual experiment.
The cabin is held as tnut as pos
sible between mooring ship and
launch, about a furlong apart. Just
nt the water's surface.
The dirigible, approaching, drops
jits line as before, but at its lower
end is a snap, large enough to en-
close the cable but too small to
slip over the irbn cross tied to it,
on the launch. ,
The airigihlo steers across the
cable, at right angles. Tho snap,
swishing through the water, lilts,
opens and closes on the cable. The
launch instantly heaves Its end,
cross and all, overboard.
. Tbe snap slides aicng the cable
until the cross comes on bourd.
makes the cable fast, and then, in
turn, the mooring ship calmly reels
in the dirigible.
Things are not perrect. If canta
loupes were as big as watermelons
they would cost too much.

Your Saving!
Economy in gasoline is never
a matter of what you pay per
gallon. There's no such thing
as a cheap gasolinebecause
the motor pays the difference
, always. I
Take Union Gasoline
for example: Here is a
tfiality product not
made to sell at a price.
Yet for that very reason
it Is the most economical
of all gasolines.
You save with Union
where saving counts most
that is on motor-upkeep,
and on ultimate
mileage.
Because Union Gaso
line is non-detonating, its
' explosion progresses with
resulting power that is
smooth.
WithUnion,your motor
starts quickly accelerates
with a swift, vibrationless
pick-up easily attains an
even, gliding speed.
You can be as extrava
gant as you like in your
choice of gasolines and
here extravagance means
only carelessness but you
can't get better than Union
at any price.
Made with regard only
for quality, and sold only
at Union Oil service sta
tions and independent
dealers of the first class.

OF CORN STALKS
AMES, , lovva.-f-fP).- ft i ton of
corn stalks In this region has buun
considered so much agricultural

when converted Into wiper.
Professor O. R. Bwnnney, bond
of tho department, has manufac

corn stulks and ho believes it can

stock of woodpulp paper. Prof;

Tho question of utilizing corn

Oat nnd wheat straws havo boon
