Hawaiian Deaths Revive
Poison Fish Traditions
HONOLULU. fP) Tho death

attributed to the eating of the

caused a dispute as lo whether the
fish, a fairly common vurlety In
Hawaiian waters, is poisonous In
Itself or became so through polsion

Hi niu nil improper methods of prep

revived some Interesting legends
among the llawallalis,
Tho Queen's boapltul. In a bul
letin Issued after exhuustivo exami
nation, declares that tho six bal
loon fish which were supposed to
have caused the death of tho "two
Chinese were not poisonous. Tho
bulletin explains further that it Is
possible that theso fish at certain
times .or pluces eat a poisonous sea
weed. The hospital points-out also
that there In a variety of the fish,

poison of certain toadstools, and
that on the island of Moloknl It la a
well known fact that certain fish,
such as the ordinary harmless ulna,
If taken on one side of tho Inland,

where are wholesome food. The
mullet is said to be poisonous in
Moloknl waters at certain times of
tho year, and to produce choking,
dizziness und terrifying dreams.
The legend la 'ihat certain gods
came at various seasons to live at
the seashore, and whilo they re

"The true explanation," say the
hospital chemists, "Is probably that
