Southern Pacific
Makes Promises To
California People
Agents For Railroad Talking
to Folks in Modoc and
Lassen Counties
Anticipating the possibility of tho
Invasion of California by the North
ern lines, the Southern Pacific is al
ready busy in Modoc and Lassen
counties. Taking time by tho fore
lock agents of the company are mak
ing a canvass of every Industry that
promises production of tonnaRe nnd
to these a wonderful story of de
velopment Is unfolded.
This story has to do with tho ex
tension ot the Modoc Northern from
tho announced terminal at Cornell '
to a point Just north of Happy Camp,
where it turns abruptly east to Al
turas. . Hero It Is merged with tho
.V. C. O., which, broad-gauged, car
ries tho lino south to Madeline.
From this point it strikes off in a
southwesterly direction and, follow
ing tho survey of the old Goose I.ako
Southern, It traverses Dry Valley
and Grasshopper Valley,' tapping tho
Imnionso timber bolt north of West
wood Junction. ,
It is understood that application
is to be made to the Interstate Com
merce commission for permission to
construct this line. If granted it
will practically close that territory
to any other lino, as tho route out
lined blankets thnt portion ot Modoc
nnd Lassen counties.
With tho evident purpose of mak
ing It difficult for a competing line
to cntor that section, tho Southern
Pacific, iiiBtead of continuing south
via Happy Camp, Lookout, Bieber,
Hnydonhtll nnd Dixie, through a ter
ritory of comparatively easy con
struction and immense timber ton
nage, takes a straight lino cast
across Modoc county to .Alturas.
Leaving a point near Madeline, it
returns west across Lassen county,
swinging in a southerly direction to
a Junction with tno main lino ot
Wostwood.
It Is also proposed, according to
those agents, to build n lino to Chlco,
tapping another largo body of timhar
and giving a wnter level grade from
Portland to San Francisco. Later n
lino would ho constructed north from
Wostwood Junction to tap tho tim
ber in western Lassen nnd Modoe
counties nnd servo Dig Valley , and
other valleys adjacent thereto.

I. W. Rhodes,, former employe at the Bradshaw ranch,
