Yreka To Vote On
Fire Department
(Special to The Herald)
YREKA. .Calif., July 9. To pro
vide approximately JISOO a year
for the maintenance of an adequate
municipal fire department and for
the purchase of necessary fire fight
ing equipment, a special election
will be held In Yreka July 20.
The need for the proper financing
of the fire department has been ap
parent for several months as the
lime for payment of one of three
installments for the fire npparutus
purchased last year neared and 900
feet of the 7S00 feet of hose owned
hy the department began to show
more and more the ravages of wear.
When the matter was brought be
fore the board of ci:y trustees at the
first July meeting last week. It was
deoidod to have City Attornoy Hor
ace V. Ley draft nn ordinance,
lngnlising the special, election.-- This
was done and at a special mcoting.
the ordinance was unanimously pass
ed.
Under the proposed system of fin
ancing the fire department, a tax
levy of 20 cents on every $100 ot
assessed value will be fixed, creating
an annual fund of approximately
ilSOO, which will be sufficient tp
pay the balance due on the recently
purchased apparatus, (3500, which
will fall due at the rate of a little
more than (1000 a year.
By the maintenance c'. un ane-
quato fire department, business men
of Yreka are confident that the
premium charged for fire Insurance
in the business area as well as In
the residential districts will be ma
terially reduced by the underwriters
and the ultimate saving will be far
greater than the Increase in taxa
tion. This is exclusive of the actual
fire loss Hint would be Incnrmd if
tho city had no proper means for
checking fires in (heir Ipclpieney.
At the last luncdicon of the I. ions
club, O, G, (Steele, James R. Tap-
scott and Robert H. DeWItt were ap
pointed as a committee to further
the campaign for the passage of the
ordinance and following an addresH
hy Steele before tho Yreka Chamber
of Commerce last night, that body
went on record as endorsing the levy.
