this morning to two young men,
who asked permission to give two
unfortunate companions In the. jail
below sqme cigarettes aqd tobacci.
The two unfortunates below had
been picked up last night by pat
rolmen in an alleged Intoxicated
condition, - caused by consumption
of canned heat.
"If you make It too easy for
these canned - heat addicts, while
they are in jail, they don't mind
coming luck ' so much." Loucks
continued. "So ycu might just as
well tell your friends that they need
not bring any mure stuff for any
of the boys down below."

Tho suit dates back to 1921 whou
the school district sold bonds In the
amount of $30,000 co the Clark
Kendall Co.. tor the financing ot a
school building in Chlloquln.
According to tie complaint, Van
Riper registered nud certified the
bonds but failed to turn them over
to the purchaser, Clark Kendall &
Co.. tod receive tho money therefor.
Instead, the complaint sets f.'rth,
he turned tho certified bonds over
to directors of the school district
who' in turn delivered them to pur
chaser and received the money.
The $30,000 was deposited by the
directors at first In the American
National Bunk, but. $15,000 was
later transferred to the First State
and Savings bank. When this In
stitution closed its doors, the $15.
000 was fcat to tho school district.
It is for the recovery of this
sum lost when the bank became de
funct, that the school district is
bringing suit. The district claims
that Van Riper should have turned
over the bonds to the Clark Ken
dall Co.. received the money for the
bonds und issued the money in war
rants from the county treasury for
the purpose the bond issue was ap

questioning. A preliminary hearing
of the four Chinamen was to have
taken place this afternoon before

Nine Chinamen and 32 whites
were "taken in the raid staged by
deputy sheriffs and city patrolmen.
It is thought by tho district attor
ney's office that tho dive was estab
lished by a San Francisco vice ring.
