"Just as every cloud, has a sil
ver lining, so every possible benefit
has its corresponding abuse. We
are already getting a foretaste in
a small way of what such a mon
opoly ns this might do to the peo
ple in the absence of adequate and
effective public control.
Consumers Robbel
The concentration of owner
ship ot water power nnd steam
plants which produce electricity,
and' of the transmission and dis
tributing lines of wire over which
it travels from the producer to the
consumer, aro all bringing about
enormous economies which the com
panies are keeping almost entirely
for themselves. There is little or
no reduction from tho war-time
rates of electric service, and from
these gigantic savings the consum
er is getting little or nothing.
"Moreover, In addition to the
largo profits which the companies
nro distributing to their stock
holders, they are realizing huge
sums from tho rise in price of their
stocks. So enormous is the value
ot this rise in stocks to the com
panies that the Wall Stroet Journal
computes the profits of only ten
companies within eighteen months
from this source alono at over
$250,000,000. All this means that
i tho companies aro taking in more
than they ought nnd the consumers
; aro paying out nioro than - they
! ought for electrical service.'
