tary Wilbur assigning three planes
! and personnel and approving the ex

ning." MacMlllan Is a professor of anth
ropology at llowdoin College, his al
nin mater, on leave of absence. It
was at Uowdoin, wheje he figured
17 cents a day was sufficient to live
on while he educated himself, that
he first came in contact with Ad
miral Peary, of whom he Is a great
student and admirer. MacMlllan was
with the Peary expedition jn 190S
whfch discovered tho North Pole,
solely because of their collego as
sociation. MacMillan's first ship on
Ills own account was purchased with
funds raised by his college chums
and was named the. Peary. Mac
Mlllan is unmarried.
When Peary discovered the pole,
MarMillan was left behind on the
final dash because his foet were
frozen and the warmth from Peary's
naked chest had failed to aid in
j thawing them. MacMlllan had ncg
t lected to line his boots with grass.
On two nights. Peary opened his
1 garments and slept with MacMillan's
. feet on his chest. But it was of no
, avail. Poary then took with him a
I negro. Matt Henson. who was a man
; described as of physical perfection
and of an exceptional ability in re
lations with the Eskimos. Peary to
, this day Is the only white man to
have visited the pole,
i MacMlllan became a lieutenant
commander n the U. S. Naval re
, serve on last February 7, shortly
! after becoming 51 years of ago. He
j was born the son of a sea captain,
: in Provincctown. Mass. He later
became an orphan and was reared by
j a strange family. He was gradunt
j ed from Bowdoln in 189S with the
i degree of bachelor of arts. Much of
his revenue came from employment
' in summer hotels, doing every sort
of job.
I After the menorable trip with
Peary in 1903-09, MacMlllan made a
; second trip to northern Labrador In
1910, to which he again returned in
1911 and 1912. Bowdoln Collego
; in 1910 honored him with a degreo
! of Master of Arts. In 1913, he
; headed tho Crocker Land expedition,
I intending to he In the Arctic ono
j year. Ho returned four yeara later,
i It was on this expedition that ho
proved his generalship as an Arctic
! explorer, when, short of provisions,
! he fed his men for nearly throe
! years on the food of the Eskimo and
brought his men out in better con
j dition than when they started.
I Bowdoln college tendered MacMil
j lan tho degree of Doctor of Science
i in 1918. He headed the Hudson
Bay expedition In 1920. the Baffin
land expedition in 1921 and 1922
and the North Greenland expedition
during 1923 and 192J.
