NEW THEORY
AS TO QUAKE
EUGENE, Oro., Juno 30. Tbo
Hiinta Ilarhura narlhnuuke was
prolmbly caused by a shift In tho
earth' structure, along . an old
fault past tho vicinity at tho Hants
Ilarbara Islunds, about GO miles
west In tho Pacific ocean, said Dr.
Edwin T. Hodgo, geologist, of the
UiiiverHlty of Oregon, in an inter
view today.
There Is an abrupt chango In Ihe
coaat line In this vicinity from east
and west to north and south, and
at some, former time ihe land was
upheaved or tho bottom of the
ocean dropped. Dr. Hodges ad
vances tho theory that some action
again took place here.
Tho shock, camo as a result of
tbo quake In Montana, according to
Dr. Hodge's theory. Tho theory ot
earthquakes, bo points out, is that
a tension created slowly. Is sud
denly removed by an abrupt part
ing of sedgenientH of the earth, and
tho relief ot tension at ona potnt
causes a tightening and consequent
break at another point. Tho weak
ont point usually breaks, henco Dr.
Hodges' theory that tho fault near
Santa liarbnra devoloped action.
Tho two shocks, coming a minute
apart, wero explained by Dr. Hodge
as the result of two earth waves
traveling from tho place or action.
Onn wave, a deep wave, travels
fust, while tho surface wave is
slower. Tho fuel that the shocks
came a full minute apart denotes
that tho action took place some
distance from Santa Harliara, he
says.
There is llttlo or no possibility of
an earlhquuko damaging Oregon,
suit! Dr. Hodge. Oregon lies between
two earthquake zones, ono to the
north, which veers off In two
anglers, one to the southwest and
the other to the southeast, and the
other zone to tho south, which
swings out to the northwest, at a
point not far from San Francisco.
Oregon lies In what Dr. Hodges de
scribes as a submerged area, with
no faults liable to quake activity.
Dr. Hodge has studied, tho coast
area lu regard to relation, of earth
quakes and tho results and bases'
the theories on his investigations
