banquet held In the old United
States hotel, where President Hays,
was a guest In 1880, at Jacksonville
given by the Jacksonville chamber
of commerce and the Med ford Crater
Club.

with army lite, enlivened the pro
ceedings and the visitors were given
an outline of the early day history
of Jacksonville as a mining camp
and supply center for southern Ore
gon, by Attonrey Ous Newbury, of
Medford, who spent bis early life in
Jacksonville.

new Eugene hotel,' built and fur
nished at a cost of more than

Th new structure, seven stories
in height and with 1S3 guest rooms,
was thronged with Eugene people
and out-of-town guests.
Approximately 400 attended the
opening banquet.
