Five Drowned
in Boat Wreck
ATLANTIC CITY, N. J., Juno 12.
(A. P.) Five pomons are, be
lieved to have been drowned last
nlKbt when un exploHlon, followed
by fire, destroyed the pleasure boat
"Crystal," forcing 30 yersons, In
cluding tho crow, to leap overboard
while on a pleanuro cruise eight
miles off Atlantic City.
Tho explosion Is believed to have
been cuuscd by a cigarette end
thrown down a hatchway.
The body of Deborah McKnlght,
IS, was brought anlioro by coast
guards, whlla a patrol boat is con
tinuing tho search for John Han
iiuiii of Nortbfleld, Warren Dllks
of Llnwood, Joseph Wilson .of
Norlhfied, and .Martha Weiss, still
missing.
A "dry navy" boat rescued 11
others.
Captain William Young, com
mander of the craft, Is held in
12000 ball pending an investiga
tion. Curtis Lylo of Northfield, a pas
senger, said the merrymakers were
singing and dancing on the top
deck when the explosion occurred.
"Thoro was a terrific blast like
a crack of thunder banging right
Into your oars," be said. "The boat
seemed to heave right tip off the
scu. She rolled from side to side,
long, sickening rolls that threw us
around, and In a moment, when we
got to our feet, I found myself on
the top deck. I must have been
blown out of the cabin.
"f ho"7 boat gave an awful lurch
nnd I saw two of the life boats go
spinning Into the ocean. The next
thing I knew most of u were
floundering around in the water."
