The. cordial - reception accorded
Mayor Goddard demonstrated that
the people of Tule lake valloy ap
preciated his efforts to koop the
KUmath country open to railroad
development.
Hinstuiw S.H-uks
President Wilson asked If any
representative of the Southern Pa
cific had anything to say as to why
the Modoc Northern had not been
built and C. A. Hlnjhaw, assistant
traffic manager of tho S. P. volun
teered to explain his company's po
sition. Tho main reason, he stated,
was the fact that tbey were tied up
with lawiults '.arising out of the
nnmerger of the Union Pacific-Southern
Pacific, as well as that of the
Central Pacific-Southern Pacific.
Since the settlement of these suits,
"financial and physical conditions"
have interotercd.
. Interest t"was added to his re
marks by the Interjection of a ques
tion by John-Reber as to why tho
rate in cheeso from Tillamook to
San Francisco was 45 cents, while
from Klamath Falls to San Francis
co It was 11.47. Mr. Hlnshaw stat
ed that these rates were controlled
by the Interstate Commerce Com
mission, but that the difference In
the rate was due to water compe
tition. "That word 'competition' ex
plains It all," was the parting shot
from Mr. Rebcr.
Farmers Want R. R.
R. E. Bradbury was next t ad
dress the meeting and he stated that
the Klamath Irrigation district had
already taken steps to intervene In'
the railroad controversy ' and that
every effort would be put forth by
It to bring In competing railroads.
Dr. Trout, president' of the Malla
Chamber of Commerce made a few
remarks to ' the effect-that' the peo
ple in the Tule' lake valley wanted
a railroad and they did - not ' care
who " built 'it, ' provided It was -a
through line." "We donf want to be
a tuft on the end of the dog's tail;
we want to be a part of tho dog,"
he succinctly stated in emphasising
the fact that a branch' line would
not do. ' ." ; ' ,' ..-r -,
. So Branch Lino " "
A, M. . Thomas. 'secretary ' of ' the
Klamath' Irrigation district was the
lait speaker and also presented the
resolutions for consideration. Be
fore reading the resolutions he stat
ed he did not agree with Mr. Corey
about keeping hands oft in the rail
road fight. "I dont believe In pussy
footing. Down here we want a
railroad, a through line and not
a branch. We have been fed up on
promisea by the Southern Pacific
and I believe the time has come
when we should go on record as
repudiating the dllaJjry tactics of
a company that has kept this coun
try,, back. " When the question 'of
building an east and west line was
first taken 'up by tho Orogon Public
Service commission, I wrote to Mr.
Corey asking' that he urge the con
struction of ' the' Modoc Northern.
His answer was that there were only
sixteen miles of that line In Ore
gon and as we were ' practically on
the state line' we should go - to
California if 'wo wanted any help.
Personally I believe. that if the Ore
gon Trunk Is permitted to build to
Klamath Falls, it will continue on
south . to a connection with tho
Western 'Pacific and that lino will
pass through the Tule lake valloy.
That It. what' we want. Lot us go
on reoord as showing uur deslro
for It."
Too Much Delay
"Mr. Hin-jhaw says that It takes
time and monoy to build railroads.
.The Southern .-Pacific has had
seventeen, years . in which to con
struct a line through the Tulo Lake
valley. ' I , think' that Is sufficient
ilme.. The Hill lines now come and
say they have the money. It Is my
idea that' we ought to encourage
them for the time to at band as
well, as the cash."
.:l.Before submitting tne resolution
to .a vote, President Wilson said:
."That there may be no misunder
standing, I want you to know that
this resolution Is antagonistic to the
Southern Pacific. If you I'J not
want to antagonize- It, then dont
vote for the resolution as It Is;
If you do want to antagonize It,
then a vote for the resolution will
have that effect." (. '
