SOME SENSIBLE ADVICE
It is good, sensible advice 'which Attorney' C. A. Hart
of the Hill lines gives the lumbermen of Klamath county
in an interview quoted elsewhere in this issue. It is
sound logic and should help to allay the fears of those
who might think the coming of the Hill lines would
demoralize the lumber business of the Klamath country.
With the coming of the Hill lines it is generally
conceded that the Shelvin-Hixon interests of Bend and
the Weyerhaeuser interests will start large operations in
their Klamath timber holdings. One of the arguments
advanced by opponents of the Hill lines is that these
two operations would furnish such competition for the
mills already here that the lumber market would fall
away and do irreparable injury to the industry in this
county.
But this is not so. In the first place, these two opera-
tors do not confine their output to box shook; indeed,
it is but a negligible part of their mill operations. Furth
ermore, their markets are already established in the
east and the middle west, and it is to supply further de
mand for their existing markets that their Klamath pro
ducts will be cut.
True, Shevlin-Hixon. and Weyerhaeuser may offer
some little competition in "the California market, but
instead of bringing disaster to the mills now operating
vhere, this competition will have a wholesome effect on
the lumber business generally in this section. ."
But aside from the selfish interests of the lumbermen,
." the coming of the Kill lines and the subsequent invasion
- of the Shevlin-Hixon and Weyerhaeuser people will mean
a mighty development for Klamath county. Together,
they will bring several thousand new families to this
county, and add thousands upon thousands of dollars an
nual1;' to the rapidly increasing payroll.
There is every reason why the Hill lines should be
aided in their determination to tap this rich country,
and not one sound argument against it. -
