"This Style is Always Popular With the Little. Boys"
GOOD RIDDANCE
Klamath county is to be congratulated if the report
is true that District Attorney. Ganong has decided to
demand the resignation of his deputy, W. P. Myers. It
is to be hoped that the man who succeeds to the pctet
will more faithfully and fairly represent the people of
this county. '" '
Myers, has on repeated occasions displayed his un
fitnesajfoj... office, rlis defense of the moral pervert
Amies,, in the federal court at Portland was an outrage
against every decent citizen .in Klamath county and
the state at large. . . . .
There have been numerous' instances where this man
Myers has shown himself enjirely incapable of con
ducting the district attorney's office along clean, legi
timate lines, and the sooner He is ousted the better it
will be for Klamath county "- . " I-
His greedy effort to wrjpg.a $25 fee from a poor
lumber worker for doing a service which he could well
have.done in his role as acting district attorney stamped
him in the minds of the public a a man who was a
menace to the public he was supposed to serve.
District Attorney Ganong, ill in a government hospital,
is to be commended for his .reported determination to
rid himself and Klamath county of an official who ap
parently has no conception of' the meaning of public
service.

STEWARTS WASHINGTON'
LETTER
Ry CHARLES V. STEWART
N'KA Service Writer
WASHINGTON". May 2. Not even
the biggest' issues of international
politics bother the State Department
as it Is bothered periodically by con
troversies over the "presentation" of
American women at the royal court
of St. Jnmcs.
Matters in dispute between gov
ernments can be argued, adjusted,
compromised. Trained men talk
them over rationally. There are.
rules and precedents to go by. Rea
son rules at least soma of the time.
Reason has nothing to do with
being "presented" at court. Tho
American woman who wants to bo
"presented" just wants to be "pre
sented" "because." Tho average
American can't possibly imagine how
a certain typo DOES want to-be "pre
sented."
With a woman of that type it's an
obsession, a longing like the long
ing of the confirmed dope fiend for
bis favorite drug.
"Presented," that woman has "ar
rived" socially. She can quit. For
her death has no sting. She's ac
complished all things.
"Unprcsented," her life has failed
Ignominiously.
Other than American women may
be this way, too. I don't know.
The Americans are the ones I ob
served, as a correspondent In Lon
don, where the "presentation" fight
always Is on at the United States
embassy whenever a "court" Is
ahead. .
An eligible candidate for "presenta
tion" must possess three qualifica
tions. 1. Respectability. Most of them
have that. ,
2. Money enough to pay for the
prescribed outfit. All have that or
they wouldn't be candidates.
, 3. An adequate "pull" to get
them a "command" to attend court.
""That's whero they fall down. You
can count on your fingers the Ameri
can women with "pull" enough of
their very own to get tho necessary
"command." They Include the dip
lomatic group, those who have mar
ried into the English peerage, a few
who havo spent decades and for
tunes in England building i them
selves up socially and two or throe
of the Buper-elect hero at home.
The rest must depend on tha rec
ommendation of the American am
bassador in London. . Ills recom
mendation invariably does the work,
but every tlmo there's a "court" he
has hundreds of applications and
only a dozen or twenty recommenda
tions to dispense. :
Who gets 'em? '
You'd better believe that deciding
that Is what makes the ambassador's
hair turn gray.
Tho applicants mostly nro big
peoplo, mind, with lots of influence
in tho homo land. It doesn't do to
offend them and yet it has to be
done.
After pounding tho ambassador on
ho back until ho's half dead for ho
can make his limited number of
"commands" go only just so far
they begin bombarding the Statu De
partment. "Favoritism!" they yell.
There were two "courts" In suc
cession In London recently. The
fyctu Department officials are wild
eyed yot. Hut probably they're not
a circumstance to the way Ambas
sador Houghton looks.

cAt the TINE TREE
Since tho announcement by ho

has been aroused hereabouts In tho
celebrated allegory with which his

classis literature. Tho public li

constant demand by people wishing
to refresh their memories upon the
famous poem, or to read It for the
first time, before seeing the picture.
"Inferno" narrates un Imnginnry
journey mado by Dante through
hell. At the outset ho finds himself
lost within a fearful forest, whero
he encounters threo wild beasts.
Fearing the monsters will dnvrfur
him, he looks about for help and
before him appears tho spirit of tho
ancient Roman poet Virgil who has
been summoned from punishment
