. JiWe ;.flnd, .after, painstaking:; re?:
search, that Cruel Jimmy Johnsan
was logging superintendent tho year
that, the big ruin came up from
China and washed all the grass out
so that the river pigs had to wear
straw hats to food Babe. Every
thing was progressing splendidly
until Mr, Bunyan began smoking
cigarettes. Cruel Jimmy caught
him smoking a cigarette ono day,
and promptly ran Paul out of camp
with a peavy .handle. .When Paul
came back, he found that Cruel
Jimmy had' packed his . turkey, and
gone down . the tote road.
Jack Sampson worked for Paul
Bunyan the year before the winter
of tho Blue snow. Ho ran the camp
below the Junction o . the Little
Gimlet and the Big Augur that
winter, and talked Paul Into Instal
ling the Aurora Borealis so he could
run three ten hour shifts. Some
say that Jack and Paul fell out over
the lights, Paul wanting to abandon
them because they were unreliable,
and Jack maintained they were
good enough. Others say that they
got '.into an argument over , who
could cover the most ground in a
day, Sampson with his Buckskin, or
Paul with his Blue ex.
Anyway, they fell out, and Samp
son is now running camp No. 1 for
the Pelican Bay Lumber 'company.
Eighty per cent of all fires occur

SETS FOR EWAUNA
Bud Whipple is setting for Jo

replaced Jo Smidle, who left Ewauna
last week. ,
There is no. morts. reason for the
usual forest fire than there is for
the average grade crossing, accident
all that is needed is a little thought
and care.
' The forest3 of the United States
are being drained about four times
os , fast as new timber Is being
grown. Twice as many acres o
forest lands are burned over each
year as are cut over in lumbering
operations, -i Disease and insects also
take an appalling toll every year.
Twonty-olgnt states are making
definite efforts, to protect their .pri
vate and public forest land, aggre
gating "175,000,000 acres,, from flrp
from July 1,' 123', to June 30, 1924"
they expended for this purpose
500,000. Under ' the provfsibns' 'of
the Clarke-McNary Forestry Act,
the Federal government' will' active
ly cooperate with states and indi
vidual landowners in protecting all '
forost land from fire,' insects,' and
disease. . . .
Only one-fifth of Amernca's for-
est land is owned by the public
through the Federal, state or local
governments. : The other, four-fifths.
W owned privately. Farmers own
one-third of All the nation's fore3t
land, mostly In the, form of small
woodlot. ... Taxations reforms are
vital if this privately owned forest
land is to grow new timber cropst
Idle forest land means costly, tim
