WORK
OF
OPEN JU H SCHOOL TOLD
BY KLAMATH PUBLIC
SCHOOL NURS
E
n
m
(By SI Us Apnea C'oviill, I'ubllc Soliooj Nlii-to)
One of the most Interesting visits
made while In Portland was to the
Open Air School. It Is sot tor
tuberculosis' children If they really
have tuberculosis, thej' are ex
cluded.? Children emaciated from
some disease, those., with heart
trouble, 'those run down where tu
berculosis fs . In the family, those
who for any reason are physically
not fit to keep ordinary school
hours and rules, are sent to this
school. i,
I was fortunate la finding both
Dr. Helen Cary, the school phy
sician', and the school nurse there.
The object t to teach health hab
its. A record of the 'Weight of each
child- ti kept each week. Shower
baths are the first thing in order,
then each pupil has his own tooth
brush, and the teeth are thorough
ly scrubbed.!
The two school rooms are flooded
with iresh air from the open win
dows, but warmed by steam heat.
Also each pupil has a sort of bath
robe to put on If he feels chilly.
The wraps are hung over steam
plpeu so they ntlll be dry and warm
when needed.
During the day folding cots are
pulled out and all take a rest. Milk
Is given at mid-morning and after-
n-yon, -while tfno hot dish is served
for lunch. The children are given
the menu for a week so thoy know ;
wliat to bring from home to supply ;
the right amount of calorics and
ritamines." ,
It ii a ill oat Interesting place,
showing what can be done with !
proper equipment and the use of '
slmplo health rule's. j
Owing to the largo number 1ot
schools allotted to . each school !
nurse, Portland did not have the
nursing service she desired for her
school children. During the past
year the State Tuberculosis associa
tion has -' ) fiiii-i) the School board
to demorfnrJte . intensive school
three nurses .trained In public1 health
work. Each of these ha's two school
buildings under her charge and the
T. B. association pays her salary.
Three of the school, principals wore
present at our meeting. Each one
expressed hi appreciation of their
services. Mr. Ulough said "The
nurses' invasion of the school Is the
biggest thing that has happened in
years." Five new schools are de.
manning the additional service for
next year. Of course the T. B. as
sociation ' has no Intention of con
tinuing its; part, The schools must
take the. work over thomsolves.

GET AT THE CAUSE!
The Advice of a Resident of Tills
Locality Shows a Way
There's nothing more annoying
than kidney weakness or Inability
to properly control the kidney se
cretions. Night and day alike, the
sufferer 1b tormented and what
with the burning and scalding, the
attendant backache, headache and
dizziness, life Is Indeed a burden.
Ooan's Pills a stimulant ' diuretic
to the kidneys have brought peace
and comfort to many Klamath Falls
people. Profit by this Medford
resident's experience:
J. H. Atwel, painter, 129 W.
Elovonth Bt., Medford, Ore., says:
"Uoan's Pills are all that Is claimed
for them. I have taken Ooan's on
different occasions when suffering
from backnche and kidney weak
ness and they have always given
me splendid relief."

TOY BULL PUP
RECUPERATING
FROM INJURIES
"Toy," is a little brown bull pup.
She belongs to Ross Flnley, and Is
the pride and Joy of the shops
around the eastern end of Main
street. Toy always has a happy
'Wiggle and a pink tongue to show
every man, woman and . child that
happens to stroll Into the shops or
passes along the street. "Toy" lives
a happy existence of Ice cream and
petting and not, until yesterday did
she know that the world held any
thing but happiness for little slick
brown haired pups.
Today "Toy" . was limping , on
three feet; on her little back were
a number of bruises and in one spot
the brown hair was scrapped off and
showed a tender white skin under
neath. She couldn't wiggle, ond her
little pink tongue just wouldn't
come out to show the cuxtomors.
It all happened yesterday when
"Toy" In her excitement about life
ani things In general was chasing
sticks across the street, Down tho
way caitne a terrible big thing called
an automobile that "Toy" wasn't the
least bit afraid of, she could even
run up. and bite the .tires. But
"Toy" was like the Utile mouse, that
mistook the wrong cat. And th's
driver wasn't the kind that had it
Ufa membership in a Humane Soc
iety. He succeeded In sending
"Toy" scuttlfcg to the curb, not
knowing whether he hod sent tho
lift) out of the tittle (risky animal.
Today "Toy", besides a limp, has a
sceptical outlook on life In general
and will how and forever more,
watch her step with men who turn
the wheels of the big things called
"automobiles."
