, Another David?,
Nearly every reader of a newspaper is familiar with
Arthur Brisbane, .the editorial writer. for the Hearst
newspapers. In his column which appeared in" the San
Francisco Examiner. of the 22nd, he had this to' say:
"Mrs. . Carrie , Cook,, who will know better next time,
stole a pound of butter from a lunch room and hid the
" butter under her hat. She was. caught, pleaded guilty and
- is now spending thirty days in the workhouse.
"Nothing was said about anybody from the District
Attorney's office being present in the grand jury room or
anything of that kind. There's a big difference between
stealing onepound of butter and $100,000,000 worth
Of Oil.-: V,T '.'v,' ' : ' V.- ; " .
"You can't hire the best lawyers or impress a great and
wise judge with one pound of butter." .-. - . r,
If Mr. Brisbane were familiar with local conditions,
he would probably have this to say in his column:
"If you are a big Power company, and if you are af
filiated with the. bigger Power Trust that is hying to get
control of the water power of the nation, you could steal
the power belonging to the farmers and.be sure of the
backing of the Interior department and its distinguished
secretary, who secured his appointment through the in
fluence of th6 well-known power senator Phipps of
Colorado. When, you have money to; make a Judas, out
Of public ssrvants, big and little, you; can !go ahead. But
sometimes there is a David that brings down a Goliath
and the Klamath Irrigation district may be that David."
