CROWN POINT, Ind., April 16.
Cnlm and unmoved Mrs. Anna Cun
ningham, 4$, confessed last night
that she gave poison to three of the
five members of her family whose
mysterious deaths within six years
led to an investigation, resulting In
a murder charge uguinst her.
The victims; Isubelle, IS; Char
les 19, anj Walter. 13, she said Bhe
had killed because she loved them
best. She believed she was going to
die, she- said, and wanted to take
them with her to join their father
who died in lsiS. For the same
reason she had giyeii poison to
David, the last son, now in a criti
cal condition in a Chicago hospital.
She denied that she hud poisoned
her husband, the first to die, or
Harry, another son, in whose body
coroner's . chemists found arsenic.
She spared Mue. 19, daughter be
cause she disliked ber she saU.
-Also Took: Poison
Each time she administered the
arsenic in bread and butler she took
a similar dose herself and after the
death of Whiter, she. added a tea-spoonful-of
Ic. line, but always re
covered. Her desire "to join In
heaven" ber husband and take with
her. her best loved children, had
prompted . her to administer the
death potlcn to Isabclle, the first
victim, who died December 31, 1920.
The confession of the woman,
who hati remained unshaken under
the questioning !n Chicago of prose
cutors Robert E. Crowe and John
Sbarbaro who had obtained admis
sions of guilt from Nathan Leopold,
Tr. and Richard Loeb. was obtained
by Sheriff Benjamin H. Strong and
Miss Maureen - jrcKcrnnn, Chicago
newspaper reporter.
Recovers From Coma
During yesterday aftor she had
recovered from a state of coma into
which she had lapsed early Tuesday,
Mrs. Cunningham talked to Miss
McKernan and admitted that she
might has placed some arsenic in
the food of David by mistake, but
was stolid in denial that she had
poisoned any members of ber family.
She permitted the reporter to ap
ply coil compresses to her head and
losen her clothing, appearing more
Interested tit changing her best
black silk dress for an apron than
in ber cold blooded recital of the
deaths.
Tela Entire Btory
Recently she asked' that her
daughter Mae be sent for and that
she be removed from her cell be
cause of the presence there of sev
eral woman prisoners. Disregard
ing ;the girl's frantic screams to re
main silent she. detailed ber story
first to Sheriff Strong and later to
an official court reporter.
The girl refused to remain and
listen to the .account of the deaths
of ber brothers, and was taken
away. She also declined an offer
to remain in the jail near her moth
er during the night and went to a
hotel.
Only when she was ask&i to sign
the transcribed confession at 2:40
a. m. today did Mrs. Cunningham
betray any ; emotion. She broke
down and sobbed..
