Huge Cannibal Lake Trout
Disturbs Peace and Quiet
Of Rainbows at Hatchery
Leah, black and swift, a huge maurading rainbow
trout has punctured the peaceful quiet life of fat rain
bow and Eastern Brook trout that populate the clear
pools of Crooked creek at the Klamath hatchery, it was
learned today from reports from the hatchery.
Emigrating from Klamath. Lake, "where trout are
trout," the big cannibal made his first appearance the
middle of last week when without warning he charged
into the center of a school of smaller trout that were
lulled into, a sense of security by being protected on the
hatchery grounds.
Like the barbarfan he was. the
tawny wrapper from tho lake flash
ed his way through his more civilis
ed brothers and before the outraged
eyes of Deputy Game Wardon Jud
Short swallcwed fire healthy trout.
Having had his till tho big fellow
returned to his haunt down the
creek. The next afternoon, just as
evening shadows were closing, the
cannibal -again put In his appoar-
anco.
This evening, Short was waiting
for htm with a rod and a bit of sal
mon egg on a small hook. Like a
shadow the trout passed from pool
to pool, gobbling a confident
youngster at this point and swallow
ing the youngster's father at the
next. '. j :
Finally, white resting on the bot
tom. Short managed to attract his
attention to the bit of salmon egg.
The black marauder evidenced some
Interest but with the craftiness of
the lake, carefully Investigated. He
passed over the bit of egg, flicked It
with his tall and smelt It carefully.
Just as the big boy was about to
gobble the egg, one of the beautiful
but dumb trout that Short was be
friending, beat the big fellow to the
bait. Twice, three, and tour times
did this occur, till the deputy game
warden gave up in disgust and re
turned to the hatchery heuse.
From latest reports the burly
cannibal from the lake Is still mak
ing mince meat out of the civilized
inhabitants of the hatchery waters
