Sugar Beet Growing
It is to be hoped that sufficient aeerage is signed up
this week to insure the retention in Klamath county of a
sugar beet expert during the remainder of the spring
months.
Unless the question of sugar beet growing is settled
this year once and for all, sporadic, but probably un
successful efforts, will be made from time to time in the
luture, and still it will not be known whether or not the
sugar beets can be grown successfully and with profit on
the fertile acres of Klamath county.
An energetic effort has been made during the past few
monthsto establish the sugar beet industry in Klamath
county. There are many problems entering into this
industry which raise doubts in the minds of the farmers
as to whether or not it can be made a success. Chief
of these is labor. ' . -
Enthusiasts can shout from the house tops and theor
ists can expound until .the cows come home, but still the
question of the utility of sugar beet growing in Klamath
county cannot be deimitely settled until a real experi
ment is made, v
. If the farmers can, without financial loss to themselves,
give over a small portion of their acreage to experimental
beet growing this year it would be well for them to do so,
. providing, of course, they are interested in the move
ment. Either sugar beets can be grown profitably in Klamath
county or they cannot. For years, now there has been agi
tation for this industry. The feasibility of the industry
here should either be proved or disproved. And right
now is a good time to settle the question once and for all.

As far back as the eighteenth
century tho fad ot collecting china
was la vogue. And then, the prices
were hardly less high than those

to iuai a few "royal factories" and
the people of wealth and position
wero tho only ones ahlo to afford
the line examples ot china,
. . Today these patterns which wore
possible to tho wealthy alono are
within tbo reach of the most mod

rarely beautiful patterns are used
In the best china factories In din

pieces of all prices.
Tho Havlland china, which Is
made fn Limoges, France, today
presents patterns of real beauty In
their dinner Bcrvicoa. The Arcadia
pattern, which Is doslgncd In the
pilgrim shape, posBosses the color
ful birds In the center, with a min
gling of soft hued flowers for a
lovely border and ofTors a delight
ful combination of colors for all
occasions and may be obtained for
a fairly reasonable sum. Equally
lovely is tho bono china made In
England by tho Royal Doulton firm,
which features patterns famous
throughout tho history of china. -
Mlnton china, which features tho
beautlf ullyeld encrusted .border
U another choice well worth the

known the world over.
Wedgwood china, which feature)
bone china, also utilizes patterns
famous throughout history.
Qulmper pottory, which comes
In such harmonious coloring and
beautiful doslgns. Is used, success

Early In the seventeenth contury
tho Cblneso porcolains bocamo fn
miliar to the western world of
wealth, and the factories of Eu
ropo, In an ondoavor to reproduco
this sort of china, followed closely
the patterns and coloring of tho
Chinese porcelains, but later de
veloped tbo floral doslgns so much
favored In our American repro
ductions. In Rouen, Franco, the porcelains
of China and Japan wero closely
reproduced, and later, at Bevres,
those patterns were also used In
the most famous plocos. Lator,
whon the Chinese end Japanouo
stylos bocamo stale, Western decorations-succeeded
thorn, and gar
lands and wreaths of flowers with
exotlo birds wore mado fashion
able. Later figures of men, wo
mon and children were cunningly
workod Into the pictorial back
ground of the plates.
One ot the moKt bonutlfnl pat

that which uses a roso Pompadour,
nnmed for Madnmo Pompadour,
which uses tho pastoral scenos on
a background of tho lovely shade
of roso favored by Madame Pom

known, Drosden china, which Is
noted for Its delicacy of coloring
and pattorn, also comes In charm
