- ' v THE' CHARITY CHECK ACCOUNT"--'- -ii
The problem.'of the smalt cheeking- account still bothers the
hankA. ; Some bankers, predict, tliat,. in tffncbhiikS throughout
the- United States will refuse, uniformly, to carry checking ac

ent they are far from being unanimous in that position. .
' v'An. officer of one of the large -national banks in Minneapolis
makes this statement: "In this bank,' unprofitable does not oi
itself mean undesirable." -.';.' '

cultivating a spirit of friendliness bet ween, itself and its cus

"NSF-ers" are another thing but it' Joes believe that the
small account should helji pay its way: .Its attitude is fairly
representative of that of the Other binks in the city.
Minneapolis bkhks, wliicii since 1915 had been' making a'sfc
ceilt monthly service ' charge on accounts under $100, this
spring raised the charge to $1.- Beckuse of a liberal policy to
ward hew ttisihess, they are thotight to carry more .small
Checking accounts proportion to the total number of ac-
' ijuius tnan Dames in any otner American city. This is due
to the emphasis placed in their adverii'sing. lor years';' on the
advantages of a - checking account ; and done so effectually

perhaps ought hot to have them ui;. ; . , ; , - :

According id its' findings, in 'each 6f sixty-three cities 'having
. aggregate bank deposits of teii million dollars or Wore, ,a ser
vice charge was tegiilarly made by kll or some banks, while in
(wo Oth'el-s-Milvaukee aiid Helena it was made "rarely."
The charge ranged- from 25 cents to $1, on balances of under
$50 to liniler $300. In only twelve 'cities was a $1 charge re
ported, and in some of those it was Slot levied uniformly by all
banks. : " - . ' . ' . : - - -

Whether, Frank B. Kellogg, as
