The passing of the "medicine man'
with all of his supposedly superna

treatment at reservation hospitals,
according lo P. D. WUdsworth, sup
erintendent of the Consolidated
Chippewa Agency.
While most of the approximately
14,000 Chippewas in this state have
become fairly civilized, hundreds of
the more timid Indians are finding
the gap 'between the old-fashioned
tribal -manner. and the modern heal
ing means difficult to bridge, said
Mr. Wlads worth. Once the Indian
overcomes bis characteristic super
stition, however, he makes an apt
convprt and readily subscribes to
this prase of civilization's contribu

him, they , make good customers.

Assessor Lee to Confer
With Modoc Official to
Determine Action
Knotty problems on "who is to
lax who mid why" are occupying the
uUvntion these iluys of 1)111 I.ee
Klumuth county unsosMior.
Proximity, of California, and the
fuct that there are no natural bar
riers between the two states that
would keep Klamath livestock In
Oregon and Modoc county livestock
in California, have given rise to tho
usual problems as to the division of
the tax spoils between tho two
counties. '
Mr. Leo will moet with County
Assessor Smith of Modoc county
next week and come to some decis
ion concerning assessment and taxa
tion of livestock both of Oregon
and California that moves back
an.4 forth from Modoc county to
Klnmuth county during each year.
In some cases, the two assessors
agree that the taxation should be
split 50-50. Mr. Los mentioned
Mike Murphy's sheep as one example.
Murphy has a eoutract with tho
United. States government to range
his sheep In Modoc county- on na
tional forest reserves during cer
tain months of 'each year. When
Murphy takes his sheep oft the re
serve he drives thorn back to hlB
ranch. In Oregon. Sonio of tho
county assessors agree that Modoc
county, California, should be given
halt the taxation of Murphy's sheep
and Klamath tho other half.
The two assessors will get togeth
er and list all the livestock of Modoc
county- and Klamath county, and
tabulate tho holdings of each.
