. TEAM ONE OF BEST
'BERKELEY, Cel., , Dee. . 87.
OpeoUl.) The Cnlverslty'of Cali
fornia has, according to ft New York
paper, one of the best football teams
in the nation. Conditions always ex

any- line of comparison that would
permit a team to be selected as the
national champion.
California has a great team. There
4s no question about it. In fou- sea

BEST BASEMEN
NEW YORK. Dec' ST. Harold
Joseph ("Pie") Traynor, third
sacker ot the Pittsburgh Nationals,
ranks, among the first five in all
around performance In the National
League during 1923, in the opinion
of many keen, baseball students.
He rivals In versatile prowess, they
declare, Rogers Hornsby, of the Card
lnals, and Frank Frisch ot tht
Giants. . - , :
(This latest big league sensation
wound up bis second season in the
majors with a batting average of
338,, ranking eighth . among the
senior circuit's batsmen. Proof
that his otickwork was timely is
that be drove in 100 run's. , He field
ed at the rate ot .SSI, making tht
unusual total -of 310 assists and
taking part In 32 double plays. ,
Traynor has speed, too, tor he
stole. 28 bases, r'. ranking fifth. ; Ia
this department Hi was excelled only
by Grantham, Carey, , Frisch and
Smith., And he took part in every
game ot his club's schedule but one,
thus proving his durability.
Traynor Is only 23 years old. He
attracted notice before completing
high school at Somervtlle, Mass.,
was bought by the Pirates after but
brief minor league experience, and
seasoned a year with Birmingham
in the Southern Association. He
made good In his first test with the
Pirates in 1922.
BOXING POPULAR
WITH BRAZILIANS;
FIRPO SETS PACE
RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 27.
The Brazilian has taken up box
ing. Not only has tiS enjoyed all
the great fights Ot recent times by
motion picture and cable report.
but now he is learning the game
himself. He has donnod the tour
ounce alores with an enthusiasm
never displayed toward any other
new sport, and It Is all because
Luis Angelo Flrpo almostan . im
pressive "almost" took the world
championship from Jack Dempsey.
Every section of this city has Its
athletic club, which is actively
promoting the game, among its
constantly growing membership.
Every city, town and village is pro
ducing Its "champions." Boxing has
become the "back lots game" of
Brazil. . Inter-city and inter-state
tournaments are being carried on
with increasing frequency, : accom
paniod by eager public Interest. ,
The youthful imitation of the
glazed hair movie hero no- longer
occupies the center ot the stage,
It is he with the prominent chest
and bulging biceps who attracts ths
aoft glance ot the. senhorita on the
avenida. It Is the day of "the ""rough
neck," Let it not bo understood,
however, that the local ring hero
assumes a "tough" pone. Ho favor
Carpentler in that ', Tospect. He
believes that elegance is not ' out
ot keeping with strength and agl
llty, which, ot course, is not dla
approved by the senhorita.
A curious feature f 'the gi'6W-
Ing popularity ot .boxing in Bra
zil is that while the Brazilian box
ers follow the American Bchool in
the . science and practice of the
gamo, the Kronen are furnishing
tint language. This is duo to the
furt that the sporting vernacular
of the American "fan" is a lang
uage apart. It cannot be translated,
whllo French is easily understood
by the Brazilians. The French sport
magazines, therefore, furnish the
boxing vocabulary In this . coun
try. :. ;-''-
