having sold some cattle at the time

Calkins was the lost witness
called. He reported having mado an
Investigation of .the Skeen premises
following the slaving; and having

apprehend the two men suspected of I
the murder. The men were arrested!:
at Los Angeles two days after the I
killing and hel,l for him. He and
Deput, Sheriff Roy Taber went to I
Los Angeles where a warrant
was i
served on the man, and they were !
brought back to Yreka. ,
Calkins identified several articles,

found in the car at the time ot the
arrest.' He identified some rifles and
a shotgun which he said the accused
men had "soaked" for gasoline and
cash at three different service sta-
tions while making their flight in the

' Accused Men Talk Freely.
He said Erno and Hard had talked
freely about the shooting, and the
subsequent fight, but each accused
the other of the deed; Hard, lie said,
claimed that about 9 o'clock on the
night ot the murder he started to
the shack where he lived, and was
Outside when Erno came rushing out
and told him. "he had got him, and
they'd have to get out." Erno, the
sheriff , said, at one time claimed fnsA
was in the Jcitchen when he heard a
shot tired and ws told by Hard -they
would have to go, and another time
claimed to hare been at the barn

the hearing, frequently biting his

from the -very beginning and main

nesses made efforts to give their ver
sions of incidents -leading up to and
following the murder. His boyish

lessly combed.
