(HTOIIKR 80. lmst j WE'RE STARTED DURING the past ten months hundreds of "people who had never heard of Klamath, or knew of it only in a vague sort of a .way, have become acquainted 'with; the "country, "and many are considering the ..Kla math region as a good field for investment.' j Publicity in-wide-spread the. re-awakening of Klamath, under the stimulus of re newed .railway building by one system, and the com pletion of the first link in another. Men who are look ing for opportunity have their eyes on Klamath. The' few thousand dollars invested in the-railway Celebration' probably, produced as much advertising value as any small sum; ever invested iri community ad vertising, i . :,.'. ' " Certainly this community has had a lesson in the Value of community advertising. The old Micawber policy has been shakeri to smithereens. Now is the time, while we've got them looking this way, to plan a further campaign that will pull them over the border. ;'V Klamath is not the only place thatris making bids for settlement, and Klamath opportunities to offer. We are sitting m a highly com petitive game, and the greatest winner will be the com munity that puts its opportunities on the market with a consistent campaign of truthful, appealing atlvertising. " - Next year is going to be the biggest year of dev elopment that the Pacific Coast-has yet- - seen. The Standard Oil company, whose stations are checking bu reaus on the tourist travel, points this out in the current issue of its bulletin, in a resume of 1923 and a predic-. tion'for 1924, as follows: ' The season of summer travel and recreation on the Pacific Coast is passing, with the advent of autumn, the flight of the summer tourist is ending. Soon will come the winter visitors. '- It has been a great tourist year -on the Pacific Coast, from Canada to Mexico. The national parks have never been so well patronized. Hotels and resorts have been filled. The railroads have brought more people to the great playgrounds of the Far West than ever before. Never have there been so many motor cars from the East, while the interstate travel up and down the coast has been much greater than in years gone by. Final estimates of travel have not been made, but we hear of increases of thirty, forty, and fifty per cent or more in the number of visitors to various points of interest over the number of last year. There is no reason to' doubt that next year will be greater than this, for it is well known that -one satisfied tourist creates an other' " ' - ...The phincipal reason for the increase of. tourists is "advertising!" Never before have the Pacific Coast and its' attractions been so alluringly set before the rest of the nation, in advertisements, in magazines and news papers,' in photographs, and iri motion pictures. '. Orga nizations "devoted to. the development of the several states have carried on extensive . campaigns, while the railroads which "come; to the Pacific Coast from the East have made great expenditures in attractive and effective advertising. There is real gain to the Pacific Coast in all this. Bui not merely in the sums of money the tourists spend, although the aggregate of such expenditures is consider able, and acids to our prosperous condition. The real ; and lasting gain is in the direction of increasing the -permanent population-of the 'Pacific Coast states, ulti mately leading to the settlement of the -great, empty, bm). .fertile and valuable, areas which are crying for people.1 For it is experience that the tourist is a poten tial settler, and the tourist who is financially able to come to the Pacific Coast on pleasure bent, or as one who i3 looking over the field for a new home, is prob ably the caliber of citizen the coast needs. Having great numbers of people more familiar with opportunities for business expansion in the Far West will also lead to the establishment of new industries.. ; -ft Of ' course, of the tens of thousands of tourists who come from the East, a very large proportion will never leave their present residences or businesses to C(no.-this way, . but there-is -an appreciable -percentage The Herald I'iiIMkIiIhb romp.iny.
