At ' mbetlng of the general staff of the Mayo clinic, held a tow day ago, ; Dr. W. J. Mayo referred to recent nowspapor comment on tali remaJTts Wade lta regard to tho present status of the cancer prob lem, ' quoting him as declaring. In substance, that there was ho cure for cancor. In the course of n lecturo In . London In July Dr. Mayb said, "Thero H( H8 Medical euro for cancer," In other words, no medicine taken internally Will cure .the disease. , Continuing, he said that a great deal of experi mental work was In progress In all . part of ; the World, all of which gradually was adding Important knowledge xdncerning this serious disease, but, unfortunately, these Investigations, which have been made on animals, have not, as yet. any ' direct application to human subjects. . Dr, Mayo, in hSs talk to 'his staff, said that the cure of cancer deponiU on diagnosis tvd removal at the earliest possible time. In some man ner, the latty must he taught to un derstand theea truths. Experience fc thevMayd clinic has been that 71.8 per cent of patients operated on for cancer when the disease is still localised,- that is, has not extended be yond tho primary foens. -are cured by operation, and the, large majority of the remainder greatly benefitted, and many have been curued even when the disease had extended beyond the primary focus. - ' Surgical operation .is the only method of removal to be seriously considered, Dr. Mayo cotnlnned, be cause it permit removal, with the growth, of surrounding tissues and Blahd,s that may have become in volved in the disease. The X-ray, radium, and . other agents have - a field of usefulness in connection with surgery, but a patient should not be subjected to X-ray. radium or;-other similar treatment without careful surgical consultation Since, if such agents are used While the diefeaso is still local, and fall to euro. tho' resultant tissue chan'ges j'delay dependable surgical operation and may perhaps prevent it. Radiathe rapy and other treatment in the hands of untrained, persons, or those whose knowledge is limited V one type of treatment, do an enor mous amount of harm. Lacking knowledge, these pratcionCTfl are not able to differentiate .and apply the method which experience would show to be the best method suited to ,the. individual patient. . Dr. Mayo now permits, these Btate ments. to be made public in the hope of correcting an unfortunate impres sion which has been spread by many newspapers in this country. Since his return from Great Britain he has an enormous number of letters from persona suffering from can- . cer, tbe letters containing clippings from newspapers in all parts of the United States purporting to quote him as saying, "There Is no cure for cancer." without reference to his basic statement that surgical re .' moval does cure the disease. What 1 Dr. Mayo actually said was, "There Is. no medical cure for -cancer."
