14, came to the United States, one

about him and arranged a match in
which he was to prove to some of
the doubters that he could punch.

Firpo met .'" Joe MsCann, a tough
youngster. After bei-ng soundly
rapped on the ohin in an early ronnd
and sent to. his. knees, Firpo came
back and forced McCann to quit in
the sixth a badly beaten fighter
Firpo'a right hand turned the trick
against McCann.
A-little more than a month later
Firpo entered the ring in Ebbets
field,. Brooklyn, against Jack Her
man, a light heavyweight. .All the
experts were out to see Firpo in act
ion that day. Herman was faster
than Firpo and danced around him
in the early rounds, keeping away
from., bis terrific punches. In the
fifth round Flrpo caught Herman In
the body with a. right and 'brought
up the left on the Inside to Herman's
chla- Herman was lifted a- foot off
the floor and sent flat on his back
for the count. Half as hour later
he was revived. '
' Then Flrpo, feeling that he had
won some glory, returned to his
native republc to receive the plaud
its of his admiring countrymen
While in Buenor Aires he fought
Jim Tracey, a tall, gangling heavy
weight . from Australia, knocking
him out In four rounds. Tracey
was a wiling fighter but had litttle
boxing skill, and carried no punch
So he was hardly a match for the Ar
gentine strong man. - ' " '
1 Flrpo returned to the Unifed
States last March tor another cam
paign, this time to pave the way
for a Wile match with Demrsoy.
Three spectacular victories were the
medium of the Argentinian's rise
to fame and recognition as a dan
gerous championship contender. The

Chicago, at Madison Square Garden
in March. Brenna.3 ripped and cut
Flrpo mercilessly in 11 rounds 6f

ever, absorbed so much punishment
that he was taken to a hospital after
the bout.
Jimmy DeForest, veteran trainer
who ondl;loned Dempsey for his
championship tight with Willard at
Toledo In 1919, directed Firpo's bat
tles, with Brennan, .MlAultffe and
Willard but shortly 'afterward he
was dropped by the South Ameriacn
in favor tf Horatio Eavelle, wealthy
Buenos Aires sportman. Flrpo and
DeForest both denied reports of a
break over financial terms, but the
boxer was the target for criticism
by j experts i who believed he had
made a mistake in disposing of the
veteran who was credited with de
veloping i him' into championship
caliber. Firpo and Lavelle. however
insisted that 'the change' was made
because of the handicap caused by
DcForest's Inhabllity to speak Span
ish.
