ONCE WIORE AT TEN DOWNING ST.
Official, Home of Britain's
Prime Minister Expected
To Be Scene of Gaity
LONDON, July 3, Just as the
white house got back into the social
whirl of Washington when the sick
and weary Wilson turned it over to
the vigorous Harding, so number
Teh Downing Street is expected to
take oh a now life now that the
younger Baldwin has replaced the
quieter' and suffering Bonar La.
Ten Downing Stroet socially, how
ever Is no white, house. London's
lords and ladies look to Bucking
ham palace as the center ' of that
phase of life. But Ten Downing
Street Is a spoke In the social wheel,
and because of peculiar circumstanc
es, that spoke has not been bearing
its Bhare of the social burdonr these
many months,
. Ten Downing Street Is the official
home ot Britain's prime minister and
ns such It has a part to play,, and a
prominent one, in. those offshoots: of
political life that go by the name of
official receptions. Over the tea-cups
on the tables of "Number Ten"
world problems are sometimes set
tled, as Margot Asqulth long ago
Informed those who read. Bonar
Law, being a widower, and his short
term of office having found him In
almost constant ill health, there was
little social life at "Number Ten"
during the days of his residence
there. But with tho Baldwin re
gime it Is bound to be different, for
now the tea-cups are presided over
by a new mistress.
Mrs. Baldwin always. . has ebtor
talned considerably. Also she always
has taken Interest In the political
activities of women, attending .their
meetings and sometimes entering the
discussions by way of a speech.
