AMERICAN LEGION
FIGHTS IGNORANCE
N
PATIONAh Educational Week
closed, and If It hjis been but
k a week theoretically ct apart, If It
has not kindled fires ot practical
ambition to attain the Ideal which
educator, editors and public speak-
ers ,bavo been talking about dur
Idr tho week, It has been a failure.
Unlets It has been but tho beginning-
ot a wldo campaign to wipe
out Illiteracy, tho work can as well
bo set down ns watted from the
standpoint ot actual accomplish
ment. It hat functioned chiefly In the
schools, whero all aro pursuing tho
pathway of literacy. Except as It
. may Influenco thoso whom It reach
es In tho schools, both students and
teachers, to consecrate and rcconso-
' crato their lives to tho crusade
against Ignorance, It has not even
touched tho fringes ot Illiteracy.
Tho American Legion, whose
members sacrificed much to make
the world safo for democracy. Is en
gsged In tho battlo against lgnor
tnco to keep tho world eafo for
democracy, through tho establish
ment of an enlightened democracy,
which will bo fitted for tho ser
ious task of self-government.
Tbo Legion could find no worth
ier work. All know that 11,1s strong
enough for tho task, ir It sincerely
sets out to accomplish It. And tho
words ot tho national commander,
Aivln Owsley, which follow, show
understanding and dovotlon tha?
! sn encouraelne outlook. In a
late lssuo of the Legion Weekly,-!
tbo national commander said:
Illiteracy is tho cursb of Amer
ica today. Ignoranco and Illit
eracy aro the causo of tho woes
and misery of tho world. Men
engago in personal difficulties be
cause of misunderstandings. Na
tions, as collections ot Individuals,
cogage In war becauso of misunder
standings, also.
Tho American Legion enjoys tho
opportunity to champion tho causo
of education for tho masses ot tbo
American people. Wo urgo upon
every man, woman und child the
coming togothor at our schoolhous-
i:s and counseling with ono another.
for tbo moulding and turning out
ot a bettor and moro Intolllcfnt cit
izenship. Education for patriotic citizen
ship must be tbo first consideration
of the leaders of American thought
for the next .generation. Let us
wlpo IllltoracVoff tho face of tho
American continent. Why shouldn't
wo sweep It off tho face of tho
earth? It can bo destroyed within
tho next few years In tho United
States. Tho Legion pledges Its best
efforts; wo call upon every patri
otic citizen to Join In this com
mendable undertaking. I am grate
ful to tbo score and moro ot patri
otic organizations that aro so high
ly consecrated to this great Ideal.
