Who is entitled to more credit for this progress than Mayor Wilson S. Wiley He took charge of the city government two years ago at the solicitation of the best business men in this community, because they realized the city faced a financial crisis that only a man of logical mind and sound business judgment could avert He didn't want the job. He Was Drafted He found the city staggering under a cool million of dollars bonded indebtedness, and only two thousand dollars in reserve to roeet its payments. N He found its police and fire departments utterly disorganized, the funds from which firemen and patrolmen are paid utterly de pleted, and these essential departments of the city government befog maintained by VOLUNTARY PUBLIC SUBSCRIP TION. He found the city of Klamath Falls rated as one of the worst FIRE RISKS of any city in Oregon. There are not exager ations. They are established by the records as Cold, Hard, Cruel Facts Today the city of Klamath Falls has two modern fire engines, complete box fire alarm system, an additional and adequate water system, and with the possible exception of Portland the best Fire Protection in the State Today there is $42,000 on hand to meet the bonded debt, and the city has a financial proram that will meet all foreseeable contingencies. Two years ago Klamath Falls was in grave danger of f inan cial collapse.. Today its credit is at par again. And during the two years years ,of woeful depression the city of Klamath Falls ppent for streets, sewers and other public improvements, A Quarter of a Million Dollars Small men with small minds, envious of the BIG MAN who 4ii BIG THINGS because he loved his city well enough to sac rifice his own future to save it from ruin and disgrace Want to Pull Him Down They take advantage of a situation that is vexing this nation from coast. o coast They say he hasn't enforced the Volstead amendment. The biggest men in America have tackled the prob lem and haven't Solved It Yet Mr. Arthur R. Wilson has said that he will do what federal, national and municipal executives have so far failed in, that he will run out of the city All Bootleggers and Gamblers Citizens are entitled to know how he proposes to do it. We call upon Mr. Wilson to specifically these questions. HOW DO YOU PURPOSJ. TO EXTEND THE JURISDIC TIONAL POWER OF THE CITY TO REACH RUM RUNNERS FROM BEND OR CALIFORNIA? , ARE YOU NOT CAMOUFLAGING TO GET THE VOTE OF A CLASS THAT IS NOT IN SYMPATHY WITH YOUR AVOWED REFORM ATTITUDE WHEN YOU DECLARE FOR OPEN POOL ROOMS AND MOTION PICTURE THEA TRES ON SUNDAY? DID NOT YOUR PRESENT ACTIVE SUPPORTERS SLOUGH, CHILCOTE, DUNBAR AND LEONARD FIRST OFFER THEIR SUPPORT TO DR. A. A. SOULE FOR MAYOR ON CONDITION THAT HE CLOSE BALL GAMES, MOVING PICTURE THEATRES AND POOL ROOMS ON SUNDAY? WHEN HE REFUSED TO DEAL WITH THEM ON THESE TERMS DID THEY NOT TURN TO YOU AND DID YOU NOT ACCEPT THEIR TENDER OF SUPPORT ON THE SPECIFIC CONDITIONS SET FORTH IN THE FOREGOING PARAGRAPH? IF YOU BELIEVED IN THE STRICT OBSERVANCE OF THE SCRIPTURAL COMMANDMENT, "REMEMBER THE SABBATH DAY TO KEEL IT HOLY," WHEN YOU MADE THE PLEDGE TO THE ABOVE NAMED GENTLEMEN, HOW DO YOU JUSTIFY THE CHANGE OF CONSCIENCE THAT PERMITS YOU NOW TO PROMISE ITS DESCRA TION? & . i ;t IF YOU CAN SO EASILY SILENCE THE DICTATES OF YOUR CONSCIENCE AS TO PERMIT, FOR POLITICAL PURPOSES, SUCH A REMARKABLE JUGGLING OF HIGH MORAL ISSUES WHAT GUARANTEE HAS THE PUBLIC THAT YOU WILL CARRY OUT THE REMAINDER OF YOUR MORAL PROGRAM, NAMELY TO "BOTH PHYSI CALLY AND MORALLY CLEAN THE CITY" AND TO DRIVE OUT AND KEEP OUT ADMITTING THAT YOU COULD POSSIBLY DO THIS IF ELECTED MAYOR ALL BOOT LEGGERS AND GAMBLERS? FINALLY DO YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN GIVE THIS CITY A BETTER, WISER AND MORE ECONOMICAL GOVERNMENT THAN HAS WILSON S. WILEY, ITS PRE SENT MAYOR, DURING THE PAST TWO YEARS UNDER THE MOST ADVERSE CONDITIONS? These, Mr. Wilson, are PERTINENT QUESTIONS, based upon the promises that your committee has seen fit to publicly nrmke. In sincere good faith, looking only to the continued safe guarding of the city's welfare, we demand that these questions be answered so that voters who are honest in their desire to know the truth may be guided aright in their selection of a city ex ecutive. tttagggfftiiAllMM.flsW If you can convince us of the sincerity of your purpose in the face of the discrepancies in your public conduct thus far, we must withdraw our present objections to a change from a capable ex ecutive who has paoved his worth by SWEAT AND SACRA FICE. Otherwise we must continue to urge that the BEST IN TERESTS of KLAMATH FALLS DEMAND the re-election of WILSON S. WILEY (I'ulrl .ItUrilUrtnenl) ..' '. . r.v , fc. WILEY-FOR-MAYOR CLUB. -.Jil;.-.
