PENETRATED ON 3600 IS FOQTLEVEL; STRQJIIG DRAFT DELAYS First Team Crawls Through Opening at Five o'clock this Morning; Deadly Gas Feared MEN MAY DE ALIVE JACKSOv, Sept. 18, 3:10 P. M. Byron O. Pick ford telephoned from 200-foot level of the Argonaut phaft that there were no indication "of the men having plimbed in this level recently," he state tho rescue work tra had not yet explored the cross cut in the 4200 level. He said a bulk-head would be built immediately and ex ploration above the 4200-foot level would be commenced, jrhe cginificancc of this report is thnt the 47 imprison ed miners may yet be alive because Pickard reports the fire had not, gone down to the 4200-foot level. (Special to The Herald) , SACRAMENTO, Sept 18. Efforts to find the miners in Jhe Argonaut mine have been retarded by the necessity for retimbcring sections of the level where a new cavc-in threatened. The rescuers are proceeding 0 t cautiously. No bodies had been found at 2.45 this after noon. ' JACKSON, StpL 18.-1:48 P. M. The rescuers have. not yet reached the miners. They have entered the Kennedy level but it has not been reported whether they havcentered the Argonaut shaft. " ' . '"' JACKSON, Sept. 18. It A was announced at 11 o'clock that active work by the rescue parties had begun. 47 .JACKSON, Sept. 18. Tho Argonaut mine, where miners have been entombed for more than three weeks, was entered shortly after 5 o'elqek this morn ing. Although the barrier was penetrated, it was ex- ' peeled that several hours would elapse before the res ellers could penclra'te, the Argonaut workings. The draft from the Kennedy mine was ko strong that two men were required to keep each door closed in the U,iD0-foot level 'of tho Kennedy. This indicated that there is no cuve-Sn on the l,200-foot level of the Argonaut. The first team to crawl through tho opening was headed by Rodney U. Hecox of the United States Uur eau of Mines. 11. J. Duncan headed tho second team. They were protected by oxygen breathing apparatus and each carried a canary bird and burning candles in order to detect presence of carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide, the two deadly mine gasscs. While it was expected that rescuers would break through on tho 8,600-fool level Saturday or Sunday, an error in the survey s)iowed that there was approximately 30 feet more of rock to be removed. ..Powder gas delay ed the rescuers as the gas tooK a long time to clear from the tunnel. , The workers had fiG feet to go in the 3900-foot level of which 11 feet had been cleared Saturday night. wka'i'ii i;u t'lum.viu mti ks Tim lino upon, tho.Cyclo-Htormu- rai'u ui uuuhi wood's Pharmacy Indicated u down ward inovomont In t li 0 barometric pressure thin uftor noo)i, Although for .tho preceding 12 hour thoro watt little or no yurla Hon'; Weather con ditions tomorrow similar to toduy.
