.MONDAY, APUUj 17, 102
THIS week has been set aside by
proclamation of President
Harding for &eneral observance as
Forest Protection week. During
tho week tho President asks alt
Reed citizens to consider what each
may do to prevent needless waste,
of the nation's forest resources, and
to net toRvther In restoring th loss
that already has beon suffered.
Klamath county, as a region In
which n hrpe proportion of the na
tion's standing timber Is still un
touched, should bo vitally Interest
ed In Forest Protection, and now is
a good time to stop and think of
tho wealth and tho service wc re
ceive from our ferests: and to
plodgo our Individual aid toward
protecting them from fire and ta
red devastation and from wasteful
The week Is of especial signifi
cance beetuse the last day, Satur
day, Is tho fiftieth anniversary of
Arbor Day. Tho first Arbor Day
was observed by Nebraska April 22,
1S72. It has since become tho cus
tom to obsero Arbor Day by tree
planting and ceremonies In virtual
ly all the states, although all do
not obscrvo the same day, differing I
climatic conditions bringing plant
ing In February In somo states and
as lato as mid-April and May In
This year, however, thcro will bo
Ccncral obfervance throughout the
cation of the golden anniversary.
Local organizations aro planning a
program for Klamath Falls.
It Is not the planting of trees on
ono day alono that will benefit.
Tho actual plintlig that can be
done In one day would be small at
ho utmost. It Is tho planting of
the tree-loving spirit In tbo hearts
of citizens that will count for tbo
future beautlflcatlon of the city.
Tho combined effort of all of us,
must bo actively cxpqnded over a
period of jcara to get results, for we
start from small beginnings.
Our debt to the forest was once
expressed by a governor of Kansas,
end bis words at this time bar re
Hntlng and careful consideration.
This Is what Governor Stubb said:
"Tbo g:n!al days of spring call
to our memory again tho duty we
or.n to that ancient and useful
friend of man the treo.
-'In all tho ages of the world it's
truo to our Interest and loyal to
nit.- service. It has furnished tho
cradles and cofflna 0f our ancest
or; it hag glron comfort and shel
ter to the peasant and the prince
to tho poor man and the potentate.
"Trees have always figured In
our divine and patriotic relations.
Among thorn tho religion of man,
was born. 0 roves were tho first
cathedrals of our raco. Birds, sing
ing In their branches, gave us the
first Idea of sacred music and the
choir. Cod planted trees In Eden
for tbo sustenance of the first par
tuts. From tholr leaves wero fash
ioned tho first garment that covered
their nakedness. When God's dis
pleasure, threatened the extinction
or our raco Noah looked into the
forest and found there means of
salvation. It was under that oak
that Jehovah conversed with a great
man in Israel. It was in the treo
tops that David heard tbo voice of
tho Lord. It wag umong the pal run
of tho garden of Gethscmano that
.It sua spent tho last evening of htti
life. The battlo for Amorlcan free
