PRICE READJUSTMENT HELD SIGNIFICANT
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT OF PAST MONTHS

I'ortlanil, Ore.
The most significant hiislncss de
velopinont In the pni two months Is
tho tondoncy for prbes of different
roinmodlllos to readjust theinsfilves
to pre-war nr normal rolntlons lo
nnrh other, llaw products, particular
ly farm products, are IncrcaslnR In
prlco whllo manufactured products
scorn to lm following.
Hlvery month tho Now York Keder
nl Hescrvn bank compiles a prlrn In
dex nr nil commodities showing the
relntlon of present prices to prewar
prices, This Index him revealed onn

while others nre 200 per cent nbovo
In a Rcnernl way, farm products hnvo
avernRcil about 110 per cent oer
prewar leveb while manufactured
prnductn have uvernRcd about 10.
per cent. The nvernRo of all prices
has been nbotit 138 per cent. The
KM-Hl discrepancy between tho prlre
of fnrm products uml manufactured
products bus been one of tho major
cannon for driving the farmer out of
tho market In thn past two months
prices of fnrm products have Increas
ed while prices or manufactured pro
ducts have fallen, hut the average
prlru of all commodities, raw and
manufactured, has remained nbotit
tin, same. If this readjustment con
tinues. It will have a marked effect
In slImulatlnR business.
The prediction mnde by the I'ro
fesinr of Kconomlc of Mlchlican t'nl
terslty that the total alue of all
manufactured products of thn nation
must be ubout thn same sji the total
ului- of all farm products seems to
be working nut, and I think we will
find that there will not be any lame
demand for manufactured products
until thn prices are In closer harmony
Kith llio price levels of agricultural
product. 1 conclude, therefore, that
If thn prices of manufactured pro
ducts continue to fall and tho prices
of farm products continue to Increase,
the business of the nation will lm
proo, und. If the relations of farm
and manufactured products are on
practically n prewar basis by the time
J that tho fall crops ure harvested and
thn farmer Is In funds wc should have
quite a revival of business.
The principal reason for the high
price levels of manufactured products
Is labor costs and these cota must
continue, to decline before business
can ro nhead at a normal rate. Dur
ing 1919 common labor wai receiving
n compensation of a bushel of wheat
a day, whereas It Is now receiving
threo bushels of wheat. This situa
tion Is fundamentally unsound and
Is one of tho greatest reasons for the
present commercial stagnaon.
There are, of course, many other
factors entering ,lnto tho situation,
such as high federal and local taxa
tion, nnd tho condition of forelxn
exchange and International trade.
These and other Influences havo Im
portant bearing on future business
conditions, but tho relation of the
prices of raw and manufactured pro
ducts s undoubtedly tho major fac
tor In tho situation.
Federal llCncrrc Itank anil Farmer
Many unwarranted statements
have been made In support of the de
mand that a "dirt" farmer bo placed
on the Federal Reserve board. Some
ot these Blatements doubtless are due
to tack of Information and others are.
not In accord with facta which ure
easily obtained. Kor example, the
chart.'" la made and widely circulated
that (ho Federal Kcscrva banka hae
discriminated against the agricultural
districts In granting credit. That the
federal ren-rvo bunks have co-operated
In extending assistance to farmers
with unstinted liberality Is proved by
tho fact that, contrary to the state
ment that credit to tho farmers wa
withdrawn In tho fall of '1920, the
Itesorvo banks in industrial centers
were loaning 2no million doltara to
reserve banka In agricultural dis
tricts In November ot that year when
loans were nt the maximum. From

Another Ford Yarn
Wall street heard thin week that
Henry Ford has decided to acquire
two other motor companies, one of
which would be the Plercc-Arrow. If
there Is any foundation to the latest
Ford yarn, a Plerce-Arrow director,
who should know, professed Ignorance
of It. At any rate, thn story served
as n basts for a buying movement In
both clashes of stock, which carried
the common up to 1CS and the pre

Mexican Petroleum Gusliera
If current production of Mexican
petroleum wells Is any criterion,
there Is no Immediate prospect ot
Mexico nearlng exhaustion as a pro
ducer, in the opinion of K, l. Dohcny,
president of the Mexican I'etroloum
company, who Is authority for tho
statement that five new guthera were
brought In last week, one of which
may turn out to be the largest
well In the world. This well had an
Initial flow- at the rato of 361,000
barrels a day, with n pressure of 10C5
pounds to tbo square Inch, tho high
est pressure ever recorded, It la said.
It Is located In the so-callud Terra
Ulanca Fiold, about 2 miles south
ot the Orro Ami pool, where the
company has brought in some famous
gusher.-! Other wells struck In the
Ccrro Dlejo field had an Initial flow
ranging from 30,000 barrels to GO,
000 barrels. The Mexican Petroleum
company, according to Doheny, is
now producing twice as much pit
as any other company.
