And now thoy undcrtako to break a legal contract that calls for the dcllrerr orcr to ut ot prop-j erty that ha been practically paldi for In caih and serTtcei rendered.! We. aro curloui to tee how tho business men of the city will view the matter. Tho human family from tho earlleit ages, always rec ognized a square deal. Modern octety has always condemned dis honorable practices and has de manded obedience to the rules of business ethics. Wo will watch with Interest to see. now that tho truth Is laid before them, wh0 of the business men ot the city will place themselves outside ot the palo ot the early ancestor and modern busi ness conditions. that In time some of tho business men ot this city would awaken to their unfairness to us and meet us on a man-to-man basis. Wo shall cling to this belief until wo aro convinced In our own mind that nlM.mjinl rf.n Km rA!tihiwl nnlv through ono course, nfcd when that' l"'1" ' ppll. that time comes wo shall unheal-, tatlngly follow It, let tho conse-' quences be what they may. Charles Drew, who own a ranch near tho Lost River dam, mis n county sc.it business visitor over Saturday. I C. P. Chorponlng nnx In town from his homo at Miller Mill on PERSONAL MENTION j Since wo hare opened up tho sub ject, wo are coins to ask tho In dulgence ot our readers for a fur ther word. For the past year, there has been carried on upon The Herald a vicious, unprincipled, un manly. Illegal attack. Every effort has been put forth to destroy It. In this flcht there havo been In terested some ot the so-called "lead Ins business men" ot tho city. Tho reason advanced by some of theso was that wo wero lioldlng 4 hem up on advertising rates, not withstanding the fact that there was no change In rates under our old contract, even though the cir culation ot tho paper which fur nishes the basis upon which rates are based had materially Increas ed. When tho objection was raised to the form ot our old contract, we changed It to meet the demands of the objectors, but this did not sat isfy. Wo know It would not, for we knew what was going on, Just as we knew ot the midnight raid of the man who deserted his com' pinions. During the past three years The Herald has stood for CTorjrthlnR of a constructive character. Every stand It haa taken upon any ques tion before the people ot the coun ty ha been vindicated. We have sought to avoid strife and contro versy, except whero silence would be Injurious to the community. We have offered to withdraw from the newspaper business at a price that everyone knows Is a fair one. We have retrained from retaliation, for we have n0 desire to plunge this city Into a tight that will be ot such proportions and entail such conse- nuonces to certain Individuals In this city, that we will undertake It only as a last resort. Dut we prom tso you, If we start we will never quit until we finish what wo un dertake. As wo have ropeatedly stated, we are willing to meet tho situation half way. If those engaged In this campaign ot destruction of The Herald are men who want to play a manVggme, they wilt find that we will meet them on a fair and square basis, asking only that which one business man should ac cord to another. But It must be understood from the start that we will never make a humiliating com promise; that we shall not alter the policy of this paper; that wo shall never, ' under any circumstances however remote, permit any person or association of persons, to con. trot the utterances ot The Herald, but that we shall .follow the same course la the tutors that we have la tha pat.
