OREGON GETS
1102,000 FROM
FOREST FUNDS
PORTLAND, Oro., Oct. 19, 1921
Washington haa Just received $77,
180:59 and Oregon $102,489.51 as
tholr sharo In tho annual receipt!
from tbo national forests locatod In
thoso two states, according to Inform
ation from tho District Forostor'a
offlco hero. Washington's sharo
comes from tho olght national forests
within nor borders and Oregon's
from tho fourteen fodoral forests In
tho stato. Thoso amounts roprosont
tho 25 and 10 per cents of all moneys
taken In from tho national forests
for the fiscal yoar closed Juno 10,
1921, Thlrty-ono of tho counties of
Oregon sharo In these forest receipts
whllo twonty-flvo of Washington's
counties recelvo a portion of tho fed'
oral fund. Since 1906 Oregon has
rocelvod a total of $1,260,530.00
from tho forost rocolpts, whllo Wash
ington's, sharo for thla porlod has
boon $716,336.39.
In all twonty-olght atatos have re
tho United States treasury aa their
sharo of tho rocolpta from tho na
tional forests for tho fiscal year end
ing Juno 30. An additional $247,
997 of tho rocolpts has become avail
able fo road and trail construction
by tho Forest Sorvlco within tho na
tional forests of thoso samo states;
making a grand total of $867,990.
Tho amounts are considerably
smaller than for the previous fiscal
yoar when tho total was $1,652,088.
This Is due largely to tbo concession
mado by Congress to stockmen,
whoreby they are allowed untll'Doc
ombor 1 to pay tholr grailng fees
duo last spring. Thla action was
made necessary by the widespread de
pression In the livestock bualnoss. A
small portloh of the reduction la due
also to a falling off In timber sale ro
colpts of tho forests due to business
conditions.
Only statos within which national
forests oxlst sharo In tho receipts.
Dy act of Congress, 25 per cent of the
funds dorlved from timber sales,
grating foes, special usos, etc., are
returned to tbo states for roads and
schools. The amount thus received
Is ro-dlstrlbuted to counties In lieu
of taxes, based on tho area of the
national forost land within their
boundaries. In addition, 10 por cent
of the forest receipts are spent with
in the counties by tho forest service
on road and trail construction and
maintenance.
