MONDAY, HKPTKMDlill la, 1021 FEWER FDHLST FIRES H1 1921 PORTLAND, Ore., 8opt. 12. Roports just received nt District Forester (leo. II. Cecil's office hero from tho 22 natlonnj forests In Oregon and Washington show that tho number ot forest fires report ed to" -date has been smaller than a year ngo and that tho number of largo fires has been greatly re ilucod. The figures just compiled show that slnro July 1, there hare been 769 forest tires reported on tho national forests ot Oregon and Washington, as compared to 930 n roar ngo at this date. A total ot 16,182 acres has been burned ovor to Sept. 1. The Forest Service divides forest fires Into threo classes, according to tho ncreago burned over by each fire. Class A aro fires covering not over one-quarter aero. Class U covering over halt aero and to avor ten acres, and class C tires covering out 10 acre. Tho 1920 report for the per iod from July 1 to Sept. 1, nowrd CS1 class A fires. 239 cl'j D fires, and 140 class C, at total ot 030 fires Insldo tho national forests. The 1921 figures, for tho same Period, give 540 class A, 179 class D, and CO ohu C, or 161 less fires than for 1020. Tho dangorous lira soi'on Is not orcr yet by any means, the, District Forester said, and forest "ot fli w aro still urging hunters, campers and other usors of the forests to use the greatest possible caro to sco that tho:' leave no unextinguished fires In tho .woods. "Tho most encouraging result.' District Forester Cecil lays, "of tl. 1921 figures, (a thit 'ho numbbi of class C or tires covering ovo ten acres, bos been cut from 140 in 1920 to SO tor 1921, also tbo flno record being: made on most of tho foroitn For example. Ranger E. C. reach-.' ot tho Dead Indian District on tho Crater Forest had nlno fires U Sep tember 1, but the total area burned ovor by these nine fires wnj only one-half acre. Another encouraging feature to mu Is the fine cooperation being given the federal forest officers by county peace officers In enforcing thojstato laws against leaving camp fires, unextinguished. Tho Oregon Forest leads so far with 19 convict ions secured out ot a total of 33 fires reported, with tho Wttoatche'o Forest second with fifteen convictions." In 1920, from July 1 to Soptcmbor 1, there were 42 convictions while this, year, for tho same two-month period, 83 convictions have been secured, with a large number of pending tiro trespass coscg yet to" bo tried.
