COUNTY AGENT

1A nilAXUK, Ore., Sept., 2
Farmers who continue to belloro that
their county agent is simply a pur
veyor of canned adrlce, an errand boy
or an experimenter carrying around
In the back ot hi rattling car a sack
of choice seed for Tory limited dis
tribution or n few pounds ot fertlll

tho farnut of his special frlonds, aro

til do of tho service which may bo
extracted by keeping in touch with
tho possibilities ot this important
development work and getting back
of It in a community way to rcallxe
tho benefits available.
One farmer writing on two oc
casions in a farm paper referred
to tbo fact that tho county agent tn
his county seldom visited his partic
ular district and also commented
unfavorably on the fact that distil
lato is off tho market and gasolino
high in price. Iloth theso diffi
culties have been largely overcome
in four Oregon counties through co
operation between tho farmers and
tbo county agricultural agents and
thcro is nothing apparont to pro-
vent tho extension ot such service
to other counties. When It was
learned last summer that dlstlllato
was off tho market tho offlco ot
tho state loader ot county ngonta
'assisted Fred llcnnlon, county agent
In Umatilla county, in locating ix
supply In California nnd 27 carloads
were shipped as a result ot pooled
orders into Umntllla county. Seven
teen carloads wero llkowlso ship
ped Into three other counties nnd
the saving to tho farmers under
the price ot gasolino was $29,000.
Tho Umatilla county farmers nlso
shipped In gasolino from Okla
homa at a greatly reduced flguro
and aro doing the samo thlnfe this
season. '
All that Is required to bring about
this sort of action Is tho concentra
tion ot community effort around
a few ot tho Important needs ot
tho community nnd tho best agency
so far available to bring this about
Is tho farmers themselves assisted
by their county agent, it Is thought
