OCCUR YEARLY "Oregon Safety Nows" Is tho name of a now publication whoso mission Is what tho namo implies, tho spread ing of the doctrino of safety first as a means of preventing Industrial accidents. Following is an articlo from the Safety News, giving a fow statistics of tho loss through acci dents in Industries in Oregon cvory year: . Tho labor power destroyed in Ore gon each year by industrial acci dents is equivalent to the total la bor powor of a concern employing 5,107 workmen and operating 300 work-days during the year. That's hard to believe, isn't it? Well, Its true. And hero aro tho facts: ' The average number of accidents under the compensation act each year during a period of four years for each kind of disability follews: 136 fatal and pormanent total dis ability cases. 611 permanent partial disability coses. 9,729 coses where workmen woro only disabled temporarily ' A total of 10,476 cases per year. Using the national standard of measurement, each fatal or perm anent total Usability case equalled a loss of 20 potential work years, or a total of 2,720 work years. By the samo system of measure ment, tho loss occasioned by tho 611 permanont partial disability cases amounted to 1879 work years. And the total actual days away from employment resulting from tho 9729 temporary coses was 508 work years. The total of theso three typos of disability Is 5107( work yean. By again referring to the preced ing paragraph, you will also noto that the temporary disabilities nlono rosult In approximately C08 work men In the state being constantly away from their employment be cause of injuries. And in addition to this showing, if a fellow could adequately express the sum total of pain, and suffer ing, and bereavement, caused by these accidents, would that not bo a 1 0.0D0 MISHAPS IK INDUSTRIES DOINGS OF THE DUFFS TDMTrUSlSAM. "For example, railroad buying is becoming v( considerable factor In tho market, thus making It possible to dlsposo of lumber for which thcro has been littlo or no demand for some time. The furniture manufacturers aro also buying considerable quantities of hardwoods though they are finding it difficult to securo as much high gracd stock as they would like. "Tho fact Is hardwood production has been on a scantier basis this year than for many years and, al though hardwood sales havo been limited, tho situation is such that at present thcro is very littlo unsold high grade hardwood In tho South, In tho West, or in tho North, there fore an Increase In buying Is sure to exert a very strong effect on tho mtrknt much stroncer in fact, than would bo tho easy were a normal amount of hardwood lumber heme produced. "Houso building Is going along In fair volumo In tho cities. Thero aro prospects that even though fall Is approaching tho volumo of houso building -Mill be fairly largo because money is becoming moro plentiful with :ho rciult that banks aro show ing a tendoncy to bo more liberal in making homo building loans. One of the greatest factors which has held back homo building this year baa been tho Inability to sccuro loans and consequently an increase In tho amount of monoy avallablo for loanfc is going to result in so mo stimula tion to building. "Production, shipments and odere practically offset each other; that Is, A snlendld inspiration to tho employ ers nnd workmen who aro now mak ing earnest efforts to ollmlnate pre ventable accidents in our common wealth?
