pentler. at tho ago of 12, was pit boy
In a coal mine in Lens, Franco. That
little obscure mining town hod been
tho sceno ot his childhood play doys
nnd of his early schooling.
Ho was born of poor parents nnd
as soon as ho was old enough. Joined
his father, a minor, In dally trips to
tho insldes ot tho earth. Tho youth a

In thoso days Goorgos was a tlmla
appoarlng, falr-halred youth, -with
nn appearanco far from that ot a lad
who would Indulge In anything that

mother's boy.
Working in darkness all day long,
away from sunshine and open air,
didn't appeal to Georges. He want
od to do somothlng elso. 'With that
thought ever on his mind, ho occa
sionally went, after working hours,
to a boxing school that had been
opened In tho town by a Prof. Fran
cols Doscamps.
Ltko many other youngsters,
Goorgos Just hung around and watch
ed fighters work. Finally bo became
-welt known as ono of the youngsters
In tho town, and was now and then
allowed to slip on a pair ot gloves

battling.
Ono night ho gave a much bigger
fellow a good drubbing. Descamps
witnessed tho bout and was much
Impressed with tho falr-halred kld'a
showing. Goorgos was encouraged to
como to the school more regularly.
Evontually tho professor had a hunch
there was something that goes to
make real battlers in the kid at
loast a lot of nerve.
Descamps took the matter up with
Carpratler'a parent. He wanted to
tako their son under his wing nnd
train him. At first thoro was much
objection, but Descamps' persistency
won out and Georges loft his pit-boy
task for all time.
From then on the youngster was
at tho gym almost day and night.
Rough edges wero trained oft ot him
and he was stacked up against the
best fighters in Descamp's lot in
'short notice, Mmo Vanhllbroucq, Des
camp's mother-in-law, took an inter
est In the boy from the Btart.
Outside battles, with a money an
gle to them, however, woro few and
far betweon. And money talkod
mighty loud with Descamps and his
youthful pupil.
Hence they wont on little tours and
Carpentler staged exhibition bouts in
cates. at night. Let Georges tell you

"First wo staged a tight; then fol
lowed with an acrobatic turn. As a
grand finale I allowed .myself to be

weight, being Just in his 13th year
and still far from developed. Hit
third bout saw him get a drubbing
from Mazoir, a much-touted battler,
Jn 4 rounds. '
This boating, however, didn't taxe
Georges. Ho had picked up some
pointers, and that's what the youth'
was after.
Tho year 1908 took him into the'
ring with men who had gained real
reputations.
