MONDAY, MAY I IK! I TAKES ISSUE WITH CKMKXT CONTRACTORS. I Kilitnr Tim Herald: Referring to tho statement published In Thol Herald ot April 14, In which Louis' K. Porter toolc exceptions to tho' scalo ot wages set by Hodcnrrlcrs Union local No. 117. I fear tho public may havo been misled by tho con tractor's words. Our union Is an organization of skilled laborers whose chief function Is to mix pro perly tho mortar used In build ing. While good brick or good tllo Is Important, tho most essential thing Is tho mortar that holds tho brick or tllo together. Regardless ot the destruction caused by tRc wind yesterday, tho vital point in all construction is that the mor tar bo mixed by skilled hands. As regards tho scalo ot wages adopted by the Hodcarrlcra Union, I wish to say that though the cost ot living is hlghor hero than else whoro, tho now union, as a mat tor ot t.",ct, Is taking wages that are over a dollar a day less than the standard scalo In vogue through tho western country. I wish, also, to contradict tho statement made by Mr. Porter, in tho article referred to above, that our union fixed the scale of wages for cement workers or com mon labor. No attempt was Letters From The People mado by our union to fix the com4Frl(Jajp af(ornooIIt Aprll 15. Tho ponsatton for this class of labor, ' T. J. GOItMAN, President Hodcarrlcs Union, Local 177.
