FRIDAY. FKUIIUARY 18, 1031. THE GLORY OF LIFE William K. Barton There nro voices reminding us that llfo is sordid and hopoloss. There nro thoao pcoplo who haro a passion for turning llfo wrong oldo out and showing us how seamy It Is, I havo seen something ot the seamy sldo ot llfo. Tho court room, the prison, tho morgue, tho hospital nro not un known to mo. Yet I wish to utter on LJI, BARTON ovcry proper occa ston my affirmation that llfo seems to mo good, and its possibilities glori ous. I wonder It tho school ot writers who find llfo so contemptible may not manifest n reaction from that smug sclf-satlsfactlon which was Itself a reaction from a nearly hypocritical solf-depreclatlon once familiar. Thero was a time when It was fashionable for oreryono to declare himself tho chief of slnnors. Thon followed a very complacent feeling that "Thcro I so much good In the wort of us. And m much bad in tho best of us, Tluit it liardly becomes any of u To say vory much about tho rest of us." Something needs to be said about tho rest of us, and all of us. We need to bo reminded that we are not as good as wo ought to be. And we are being thus reminded, Current fiction Is anything but com placent; It Is woll-nlgh ghastly. It leaves you wondering whether it. Noah's flood wero to como again, thero could be found any people worth Inviting into tho ark. Emerson sometimes said a truth so kindly, so penetrating, that it carried its lesson straight to The heart. Hero Is one ot those illumina ting sentences of his: "Wo grant that human llfo iff mean; but how do we know that It Is mean?" There is mighty hope In tho fact that wo know that tho world and our own hearts noed to be better. It is that dlvlno discontent that makes llfo noble in its possibilities. It Is tho fact that wo know that we and tho world are not what the world und wo should be that gives us reas on to hope. It we find Hto mean, the fact that -we know that It is mean may become the basis of our hope that it shall not continue to bo so. That is what makes llfo glorious. U0 VwAjfflp tefort 'fly.
