WASHINGTON. Dec. 8. Definite
approval by congress or a compre
hensive plan for development of the
national' park system will be sought
by tbe national park servlco of the
department of Interior In submitting
lu 1922 appropriation estimate!.
Tbe eitlmatei, which were out
lined In a statement today by the
park service total $2,473,594, and
prqvldo for construction of roads,
sanitary systems, camping ground,
and electric Hunting plants for the
public camps and hotels In addition
to tho regular expenses of mainten
ance and administration. Tbo esti
mates exceed tbo appropriation for
tbe current year by approximately
$1,500,000 all of which the service
plans to uso in Inaugurating Its
development program.
"Tbe Increaso asked for," the
statement Issued by the park service
said, "Is admittedly large, but It
should bo remembered that these
pleasure grounds, the property of
the people, comprise) an area larger
than tbe combined states of Massa
chusetts and Connecticut."
The service said It would submit
with its estimates figures showing
that each year the national parks
return to tbe federal treasury In the
form of revenues a large dividend on
the Investment. These revenues in
tbe 1920 fiscal year were said to
have amounted to approximately 35
per cent of the cost of maintaining
tbe parks that year while the rev
enues this year are expected to
amount to 40 per cent of tbe year's
cost. Tbe suggestion la- added tbat
should the development program, be
approved It Is expected tbat tbe rev
enues wltbln a few weeks will be
brought to a figure approximating
the cost of administration, mainten
ance and protection.
