SUPER-CANNON
WAS PATCHWORK
Giant Gun Used for Long-Distance
Shelling of Paris No
New Invention.
MADE FROM WORKOUT GUNS
Was 122 Fest Lena, Wslohed 310,000
eunds and Throw Projectlls
Weighing 2S4 Pounds a DIs.
tance of 75 Miles.
Paris. Tho super-cannon with
which the German, begun shelling
Paris, March 23, 1018. was Jut plows
ot old, wornout guns put together, In
stead or a startling now Invention, ac
cording to American army otllcers,
who .wore permitted recently by the
Germans to visit some ot their huge
armories?
It was actually just a neat bit of
patchwork that startled tho world
when the terrific explosions began dot
onntlng lit tho streets of the city ot
Paris, although the terdlct at that time
was unanimous that the Germans had
Inxcntcd a marvelous new cannon.
Naval Gun Was Foundation.
Tosbcgln on the supcr-ennnon, the
Germans took a wornout 13-tnch naval
gun, 60 foot In Irugth. It was bored
out and n very heavy tube with nn In
side diameter or &3 Inches wns Issert
od. with about 40 feet ot It projecting
Leyond tho end -of tho original mm.
Over 'that another hoop wns shrunk
and locked to the fonvnrd hoop. There
also was a patch of 10.7 foot, which
was attached at tbo muzzle ot the
gun.
The bore or the gun wa treated to "
n uniform rltllng, the Inne. and I
grooves which Impart a rotary motion '
to tho projectile. Tho six-meter Jtcc- '
tlon ot the gun at the muzzle, how- 1
ever, was unfilled, probably designed
to steady tbe projectile and defeat Its
slight tendency to "tumble" or yaw
and rail to travel directly to Its mark.
Such "tumbling" is caused by the con
tllct or two force, one spinning tbe
projectile to the right, tbe other send
ing It forward. Such a forcu had to be
obviated as the shell bad to trnvel up
vard 24 miles on Its arc In order t
cover the horizontal distance, or 73
miles,
'citvsr Expedient to Prolong Life.
The life of the giant -run. which was
3IS.000 pounds In weight and 122 reel
long, under Uie heavy pressure or Its
high velocity projectile was very lim
ited. Hut when the Germans found
tho span of the gun amounted to only
SO pounds they bit upon a clever ex
pedient. They bored out tho Si-centimeter
tut-?, which was very thick, to
24 cestliiieters. and later to 2d centime
ters, giving It Just so much more life
ut each caliber, with only a change to
larger ammunition required. Tbe shell
hurled by tbe cannon weighed 201
pounds and was 10 Inches In length.
"WRONG SIDE OF THE BED"
Ancient Supsrstltlon Had to Do With
Setting Foot on the Floor
When Arising.
In olden days It was bellcvrd to he
very bad luck to see the new moon re
flected In a looking glass or window
pane. Mirrors were regarded by our
forefathers ns tho raot effective
moans of divining secrets. There Is a
tradition that the gunpowder plot was
discovered by Dr. John Dee, a famous
mnglclan of that lime, with his magic
mirror. Thero la much curious folk
lore about tho bed. Iledstpads were
always placed parallel to the planks
of tho floor, as It was considered un
lucky to sleep across the boards.
There Is a belief among tho Hindus
that thoso who sli-cp with their bends
to tho north will have their days
shortened. Vet sorao peoplo say they
always sleep sounder when their heads
are placed to tho north, and a Scot
tish physician oncu declared that,
when ho failed by every prescription
to bring sleep to Invalid children, ho
recommended their beds bo turned due
north and south'. The phraso "to got
out of bed the wrong way" originated
In an ancient superstition which re
garded It as unlucky to place tho left
foot first on tho ground when getting
out or bed. '
