Scarcity of Telephone Equipment
As now subscribers u number of Individuals have recently placed
orders with us for Inlophones Old suhcrlhrs havn asked for service at
new locations, They have boon told by our representatives that Imnie.
dlatn compliance u;tth ttirir itrslres Has Impossible owing to lack of
"telephone facilities" lu u particular locality "Why." one Mill say,
"tho polos and wires nre on the streot and the house Is already wired "
Wo wish Ihst the prcblrm were us simple as It sounds, There may
bo poles and wires, but every wlrv may be In use In giving servlro to
others. Thera may lx a rnble. but eury circuit In It may bn assigned
to telephones already installod. There uiay.be spare wires and circuits
but no switchboard upparatus nl thn central office to which they can bn
connected. There may even be sections of switchboard but not available
for operation on account of the lack cf norrssary accessories, such as
ringing keys, relays, etc.
The reason for the shortage of telephone equipment U simple. Dur
Ing the war period mi were unable to maintain our reserve or stock
plant, us the same mslvrluls wo umt worn required and taken (or gov
ernment purposes nnd for Industries properly favored by lha government.
Since thn war, ulth the uneipectedly prolonged problems of reconstruct
lion, production and delivery of materials nctVad lo meet even current
demands have been duluyod, Kwry business concern Is having similar
eiperlenres. Thn manufacturers of telephone ,iulpmeut have, been
bending vvery effort to fill our orders, but they In turn are meeting the
name difficulties In securing rubber, paper, silk, glass, porcelain, tin,
thread, shellac, metal parts and other articles not generally associated
In tbe public mind with telephone service.
At the same time with this abnormal situation with reference to
materials there eilsts an unprecedented demand for telephone service,
and-evn under these circumstances our record Is one of fulfillment of
demand. In the first eight months of this year we have added 6113
telephones In the Htsle of Oregon. In tbe eight months prior to our
declsratlcn of war we gained 365S telephone,
We desire to give Servlro as much aa a patron wishes to receive It.
We desire to promptly cpmpty with tho suggestions of public authorities
who have taken a proper interest tu the situation. We am facing abnor
mal conditions, but we will of necessity gradually overcome our diffi
culties. '
